About the Role As Design Manager within the Infrastructure and Investment Group (IIG) Engineering and Design team, you will lead the end-to-end design process for Nationally-led major health infrastructure projects, from Developed Design through to construction and handover. Working closely with the Facility Planning and Commissioning team (who lead Concept and Preliminary Design and Commissioning), Project Director, architects, engineers, health planners, digital teams, the regional team and other consultants, you will manage the design programme to ensure design solutions are coordinated, compliant, cost-effective and aligned with whole-of-life asset performance. Operating across a range of approved delivery models, including Construct Only, Design & Construct (D&C) and Collaborative models, you will be expected to provide strong design leadership within these commercial environments. This includes developing and managing Principals' Requirements, supporting robust design governance, and ensuring design outcomes align with Health New Zealand's Building Hospitals Better strategy. This role will play a key role in driving national design standardisation, Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), and repeatable design solutions across the infrastructure portfolio, working collaboratively with project teams and industry partners to achieve consistent, high-quality and cost-effective outcomes. About the Team/Service/Location The IIG team are focused on delivering high impact infrastructure investments that support the transformation of New Zealand's health system. Giving support, oversight and assurance across projects and programmes, the team understand that safe, fit for purpose health facilities, sites and equipment are essential for a well-functioning health system that improves the health of all New Zealanders. About you You are an experienced and confident design leader who thrives in complex, multidisciplinary environments, with a strong track record working within a range of commercial delivery models, including Design & Construct. You bring a considered, structured approach to shaping design outcomes and are credible in leading design through procurement, tender, and delivery phases, balancing clinical outcomes, safety, quality, cost, and constructability. You have a strong ability to translate broad project objectives into clear design direction and ensure that designers, planners, engineers, and specialist consultants are working in sync. You naturally foster collaboration, create an environment where issues are surfaced early, decisions are well informed, and design risks are actively managed. You bring a mindset of continuous improvement, always looking for smarter ways of working, championing design quality, and are motivated by delivering infrastructure that genuinely improves health outcomes for communities across New Zealand. You will bring: Post-graduate qualification in architecture, engineering or a related design discipline Proven experience managing design for large-scale infrastructure projects (healthcare preferred) Strong ability to coordinate and interpret complex multi-disciplinary design information Solid understanding of design standards, compliance and regulatory frameworks Proven experience developing and managing Principals' Requirements for Design & Construct commercial models Demonstrated capability managing design peer review, technical advisory and independent assurance contracts Experience embedding design standardisation, repeatable solutions and/or Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) across programmes or portfolios Understanding of how design governance supports large capital programmes and national strategies such as Building Hospitals Better Experience leading multi-disciplinary design teams Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills Familiarity with BIM and digital design tools Working for Health New Zealand Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is dedicated to ensuring excellent healthcare for the people of New Zealand.
