We are seeking a highly motivated R&D S&E Electronics Design/Digital Circuits Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team that is designing and developing advanced concepts that impact components, subsystems, and systems for national defense programs. General responsibilities for electronics engineers range from conceptual design, detailed design (a combination of analog, digital, embedded firmware, schematic capture, board layout), analysis, overseeing fabrication of test hardware, defining/executing testing plans, field support, as well as project management. Successful candidates will work in a team environment with opportunities to acquire increasing levels of responsibility. We have openings for this amazing opportunity at both our Albuquerque, NM and Livermore, CA locations. You choose which location you would like to grow your career!
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Design analog front end signal conditioning circuits to prepare an analog input for digitization (e.g., knowledge of instrumentation operation amplifiers, antialiasing filters, Nyquist, ADC, multiplexing, etc.)
Able to design and test digital electronics circuits including microprocessor-based systems, FPGAs, and serial bus-based communications.
Able to design and test analog acquisition and filter circuits for various environmental sensors, i.e., Temp, pressure, vibe, etc.
Simulation skills with spice or other time domain circuit programs
Programming of FPGAs or microcontrollers to collect/organize data from various ICs/sensors via serial/parallel communication protocols (e.g., SPI, I2C, USB)
Perform hands‑on test and debug of circuitry.
Interface with staff during the assembly and fabrication of boards
Develop documentation of a given design and give technical presentations to peers/managers.
Board layout: Design and develop specific manufacturing design requirements (i.e., PC board material, trace impedances, routing requirements, PC board stack-up, etc.) and oversight of the manufacturing of PC boards.
Develop a system-level understanding of the collected data and support for anomaly resolution.
The job frequently involves being a member of 3 to 5-person interdisciplinary design teams and typically requires supporting multiple programs/teams simultaneously. Travel to test facilities can be common feature of the job. Depending on the program being supported, the job may require up to 25% travel domestically, as needed.
Due to the nature of work, successful candidate must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range $102,400 - $199,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
Ability to acquire and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire The ideal R&D S&E Electrical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
Ability to work independently and collaborate well in a multidisciplinary team of designers and test engineers.
Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
Independently finds or creates solutions to problems requiring research, resourcefulness, and creativity.
Demonstrated experience with circuit design and analysis including FPGA and microcontroller architecture.
Demonstrated experience with embedded firmware design (most preferably VHDL) and testbed development.
Proven Experience with design and analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Digital Design, and LabVIEW), analog simulation codes (e.g., LTSpice), and HDL simulation codes (e.g., ModelSim)
Hands‑on experience testing and de‑bugging circuitry, with clear mastery of tools such as oscilloscopes, logic/network/spectrum analyzers, function/pulse generators, etc.
Ability to debug and troubleshoot from component to system level.
Knowledge of and experience with PC‑board layout tools (e.g., Altium, EAGLE PCB or Mentor Graphics), and PC‑board fabrication and assembly design principles
A passion for engineering and building new things.
Ability to juggle competing priorities and deadlines.
Security Clearance Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre‑employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug‑releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on‑site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
