DESCRIPTION The University of California San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Associate Athletic Trainer. UC San Diego, located in La Jolla, in the San Diego Metropolitan area, enrolls over 35,000 students and is one of the University of California's 10 campuses. As an integral member of the Sports Medicine team and Athletic Performance Unit, will play a critical leadership role in the holistic, year-round care of UC San Diego scholar-athletes. Will demonstrate the professional maturity and leadership acumen required. Will bring a growth mindset, strong interdisciplinary / transdisciplinary collaboration skills, and a systematic, performance-focused approach to rehabilitation and reconditioning. Will have a diversity of experience, a track record of innovation, leadership and impact, and a background in elite, interdisciplinary (high-performance preferred) environments.
Uses advanced concepts and campus objectives to resolve highly complex athletic training services. Assumes administrative leadership of related sports medicine programs, demonstrating evidence based practice in selecting methods and techniques for clinical and professional problem solving. Regularly works on highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining result as an Associate Athletic Trainer for the 24-sport Intercollegiate Athletic Program. Ensuring the prevention, management, evaluation, treatment and care of all athletic injuries that require significant time loss from sports specific training and competition primarily for their assigned sport. Reporting to the Associate Athletic Director of Sports Medicine, lead the sports medicine and athletic performance staff to ensure best practice is upheld in the design and implementation of the return to sport programs customized to meet individual scholar-athlete needs. When necessary, make injury referrals to appropriate medical personnel and manage/organize follow-up care. Oversee the Reconditioning and rehabilitation of scholar-athletes on referral from physicians through the use of appropriate physical agents and therapeutic devices. Collaborate with performance coordinator to implement baseline measurements used for injury prevention and return to sport assessments. With the performance coordinator, lead initial case management meeting with head coaches and program support staff on the overall return to sport for injured scholar-athletes. Create and implement policies and protocols for the use of equipment, injury prevention and treatments, screening tests and assessments. Be a direct supervisor and an approved Preceptor for athletic training students from various collegiate Athletic Training Education Programs. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in high-performance sport settings (Division I, professional, international or national level) working under direct supervision of an NATABOC- certified Athletic Trainer. Bachelor's degree in related area with typically a minimum of five (5) in athletic training under the direct supervision of a NATA-certified Athletic Trainer or an equivalent combination of experience/training. Computer skills in programs relevant to job duties. Experience using systems such as Smartabase and Catapult. Advanced knowledge of athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices and techniques as well as of first-aid, athletic equipment and injury assessment and treatment. In-depth skills associated with athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques, as well as of first-aid, athletic equipment, and injury assessment and treatment. Demonstrated ability to use physical agents and modalities in the care and treatment of athletic injuries. Advanced knowledge of the competencies and domains of athletic training.Extensive experience with rehab methods associated with the prevention, evaluation, care and treatment of all athletic injuries. Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion in handling sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatments. Casework management experience with like volume of sports. Advanced knowledge of electronic medical records systems. Strong knowledge of local medical facilities for emergencies, referrals, specialty treatments,etc. For positions associated with Sports Medicine, must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times, avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards. Advanced ability to work in a collaborative manner and to organize and prioritize work assignments, conduct analysis relating to programs and operational procedures and develop resulting recommendations. Strong ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with others, including athletes, team physicians, faculty, staff and others in the athletic department. Advanced skills necessary to communicate verbally and in writing. Advanced knowledge of procurement function and campus budget requirements relating to athletic equipment and supplies. Advanced ability to organize and priority work assignments of self and others to ensure completion of assignments within required timelines. Demonstrated ability to multi-task effectively; demonstrates sound judgment and decision-making; is an effective problem solver and effectively communicates verbally and in writing. Advanced organizational and interpersonal skills needed to work with a diverse client group. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact in a positive manner with diverse clientele, using a high degree of confidence, initiative, tact, diplomacy, flexibility, patience and discretion in dealing with a diverse population of students, parents, staff, supporters, campus administrators, faculty and the general public. Ability to interact effectively with others, with an affinity for networking and collaboration, while focusing on the pursuit of departmental objectives. Advanced manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine. In-depth skill in the use of various athletic training aids (tape, wraps, modalities,exercise programs, massage, etc.) necessary to the successful application of athletic training methods. Demonstrated skill in the application of standardfirst aid emergency procedures, including CPR. Must have current certification in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED, or equivalent certification from another agency. Must be a NATABOC certified in good standing.
Strong knowledge of sound teaching techniques necessary to train and instruct student interns. Knowledge of sound coaching principles and techniques for a variety of sports as they apply to athletic injury prevention. Knowledge of local, regional and national athletic training organizations as they relate to and affect current UC San Diego athletic training programs.
Demonstrated supervisory skills, including the ability to provide lead direction, to effectively motivate, delegate, train, supervise and evaluate Coaches, staff and student employees. Experience developing mental health screenings, mental health emergency plans and working with students of concern. Demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior, and attentiveness to others. Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $79,200 - $143,400 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $37.93 - $68.68
