About the Role As a Software Engineer, Backend, at Wispr, you’ll play a crucial role in building the first capable, habit forming voice interface that scales to a billion users. Members of our technical staff are responsible for prototyping and designing new features of our voice interface, building infrastructure to handle What You'll Do
Build and own core backend systems, APIs, data pipelines, and infrastructure that power Wispr's dictation and agentic features across desktop and mobile
Design for reliability, security, and scale, owning services end-to-end from initial architecture through production performance and incident response
Collaborate closely with ML engineers to integrate and ship model improvements into production, fast
Instrument systems for observability (logging, metrics, alerting) so we can understand how things are working and catch problems early
Use AI tools actively in your day‑to‑day work to move faster, write better code, and solve harder problems
Work directly with product and design to turn product goals into sound technical plans, flagging trade‑offs and sequencing work thoughtfully
Raise the quality bar through code review, documentation, and engineering practices that the whole team benefits from
What Makes You a Great Fit
Strong backend fundamentals: you've built and shipped production services and have a solid grasp of APIs, databases, and distributed systems
Fluent in at least one backend language (ideally Python) and comfortable picking up new tools when the problem calls for it
Comfortable reasoning about security, from data handling and auth patterns to thinking about what could go wrong in a system you're building
You use AI coding tools fluently and have a point of view on how to get the most out of them
You care about both correctness and speed; you know when to move fast and when to slow down and get it right
Experience with real‑time or low‑latency systems is a plus, as Wispr processes audio on‑device and in the cloud and we care a lot about performance
Bonus: experience with on‑device or edge systems or building consumer‑facing products at scale
