Job Overview Are you a full stack developer with a passion for science and engineering? We are seeking an enthusiastic and resourceful Full Stack Software Engineer to join our dynamic team, where you will participate in multi‑team collaborations that directly impact computational science and engineering efforts across the research‑to‑production spectrum.
In this role, you will work closely with research staff and other software engineers to create and manage innovative applications that support both research and production projects. You will have opportunities to integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques into existing software systems, enabling smarter data analysis and automation of complex processes. Additionally, you will engage in infrastructure development and DevSecOps practices to ensure that our applications are secure, resilient, and efficiently deployed to scale on demand. Your contributions will improve software stability, productivity, and security while addressing performance challenges on emerging next‑generation platforms. You will also guide researchers toward better software engineering practices and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to design solutions that enhance decision‑making and optimize workflows.

Responsibilities
Collaborate with colleagues across application‑to‑hardware domains, fostering a multidisciplinary approach that integrates software development with hardware optimization.
Develop and test high‑quality software, including web and backend applications, using modern technologies; write clean, efficient, and well‑documented code; design and develop robust databases; detect, diagnose, and resolve software bugs; and participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback to enhance code quality.
Incorporate DevSecOps best practices for continuous integration and delivery, ensuring that security is embedded throughout the software development lifecycle and that applications are deployed efficiently and reliably.
Work on challenging problems in a collaborative research and development team environment, contributing innovative solutions that drive scientific advancements.
Utilize strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills to effectively engage with multidisciplinary teams of mathematicians, engineers, and scientists, ensuring alignment and shared understanding of project goals.
Collaborate with engineers, mathematicians, scientists, and other scientific programmers across diverse fields to develop integrated solutions that address complex research questions.
Mentor staff in various software engineering areas, promoting better practices and fostering a culture of continuous improvement in software engineering methodologies.
Salary Range $138,600 – $235,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications – Required
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q‑level security clearance.
Qualifications – Desired
Graduate degree in Computer Science or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).
Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.
Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, C++, Java, or similar.
Proficiency in at least one backend framework or library such as FastAPI, Node.js, Spring, or similar.
Familiarity with front‑end frameworks such as React or Angular.
Experience in database design and proficiency in SQL.
Knowledge of configuration management, issue tracking, continuous integration, and software testing.
Programming skills applicable to high‑performance computing (HPC) environments, including languages such as C/C++, Fortran, Python, Julia, R, or similar.
Development of software using a modern HPC development stack (e.g., C/C++ with templates, Python, Java, Fortran, CMake, Bash).
Creation, maintenance, and automation of comprehensive test suites (unit, integration, performance, acceptance).
Proficiency in Linux shell environments and scripting.
Agile software engineering methodologies.
Programming for shared and distributed memory parallelism (OpenMP, MPI) and accelerators (GPUs).
Techniques for resolving complex software issues in applications and libraries, utilizing debugging tools, unit tests, and other methodologies.
About the Team The Software Engineering and Research Department (1424), located within the Center for Computing Research, researches, develops, and deploys software capabilities to accelerate science and engineering. This dynamic team conducts fundamental and applied research, development and application in software engineering, design, and the processes and principles that underlie the establishment of quality, correctness, and repeatability in the implementation of algorithms and applications for high‑consequence applications. The team focuses on applications for scientific computing, computational algorithms, large‑scale data analytics, and operating system components such as run‑time systems and application programming interfaces. A key element of the work is teaming with application and algorithm researchers to establish a solid foundation in software methodologies, innovative practices, and maintenance and support for production codes and libraries. The department works closely with other organizations across Sandia and with external collaborators and is part of the Extreme Scale Computing group, which unifies computer engineering and science fields to advance highly scalable and performant computing architectures based on current conventional, as well as future non‑conventional, technologies.
Security Clearance Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre‑employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q‑level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
