Veterinarian Supervisor (NS) This is an Exempt Managerial position. This is an anticipated vacancy as of May 18, 2026. All veterinary services fall under the jurisdiction of the Veterinary Division. It has a very specific mission that focuses on providing animal disease programs designed to control, diagnose, and eradicate diseases in livestock and poultry. Most of these animal disease control programs are cooperative efforts with the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services, and animal industry groups. The Veterinary Division is currently comprised of three sections: (1) Animal Health Programs (AHP) - Poultry - Livestock (2) Diagnostic Laboratories (3) Animal Welfare Programs The primary purpose of this position is to serve as Director of Animal Health Programs/Livestock. This position is managed and supervised by the State Veterinarian. Animal Health Programs/Livestock is responsible for administering and enforcing the following North Carolina General Statutes and rules promulgated thereunder, which are designed to aid in the diagnosis, control, and eradication of disease in livestock and poultry within North Carolina state boundaries. Interpretation of these regulations and rules, with legal assistance, is one of the primary responsibilities of this position. As Director, this position exercises managerial and administrative control over all Animal Health Programs/Livestock activities. Through the review of employee performance and procedures and performance standards, the Director maintains and ensures consistency with Animal Health Programs/Livestock's mission and North Carolina's rules and regulations. The Director initiates, develops, recommends, and implements policies to carry out the program responsibilities as set forth in North Carolina General Statutes and Code of Federal Regulations, Title 9, entitled Animals and Animal Products. The welfare of the citizens of North Carolina, the livestock industry, and Animal Health Programs/Livestock personnel must be considered at all times in order that Animal Health Programs/Livestock's mission will be accomplished in an efficient, safe, effective, and economical manner. The Director plans and implements realistic and effective methods of animal disease prevention, control, and eradication programs within the guidelines of applicable state and federal regulations. Priorities must be established to analyze and determine the best possible method to utilize all resources available to manage emergency or critical situations. This includes, but is not limited to, selection, training, and physical location of employees. The Director directly supervises four (4) field Veterinary Medical Officers and one (1) Administrative Specialist II. There are eleven (11) Animal Health Technician I positions and five (5) Administrative Specialist I positions that are indirectly supervised by the Director of Animal Health/Livestock. Recruitment Range: $89,072 - $145,000
Graduate of a veterinary college with four years of experience in regulatory and/or clinical veterinary medicine; strong expertise in pathology, bacteriology, immunology, epidemiology, parasitology, and therapy. In-depth knowledge of livestock management and marketing, with experience leading disease control, eradication, and animal health programs. Proficient in interpreting North Carolina and federal livestock and poultry regulations, with the ability to communicate disease status and control efforts at local and national levels. Skilled in coordinating animal health initiatives with diagnostic labs and state and federal agencies. Effective at building and maintaining partnerships with government officials, producers, industry groups, animal welfare organizations, media, and the public.
Minimum Education and Experience: Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the State of North Carolina and three years of experience in the practice of veterinary medicine.
