CNAs provide daily care of students under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Responsibilities include assisting with serving meals, feeding students as necessary and ambulating, turning, and positioning students. Care includes administering and establishing toileting routines that include diaper changes and applying restraints. Vital signs are checked and students care plans are followed at all times. Student comfort is provided by utilizing resources and materials; transporting students; and reporting observations of the student(s) to campus staff. Assistance is given with students during daily activities, including academic activities. A team is assisted when a student is escalated to maintain safety of the escalated student, students in the classroom and staff. Up to 20% of the day may be used to support the nurse's office with daily duties, as needed. Documentation is completed by filling out forms, reports, logs, and records. Work operations are maintained by following policies and procedures. FPS value is protected by keeping student information confidential. The Fargo Public School District is adhered to by following professional standards, hospital policies and procedures; federal, state, and local requirements. Job knowledge is updated by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, participating in professional organizations, and maintaining licensure. District training on de-escalation techniques for students who may have emotional difficulties is completed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
- Medication Administrator Knowledge
- Friendly and professional bedside manner
- Maintains current CPR certification
- Multi-tasking skills
- Effective oral, written, and reading communication skills
- Understands legal implications of patient care
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Certification with accredited training course through the State of North Dakota and current certification through American Heart Association in Basic Life
- 1 year of nursing assistant experience
Internal and External Clientele and Purpose of Contact Example:
Personal contact with students, staff, parents/guardians, faculty, and administrators is an essential part of the position and requires the ability to share information and must be sensitive to people and their needs. The position may handle confidential and private data.
Problem Solving:
Work involves differing situations and the ability to rapidly access and prioritize competing demands. It is important to identify the problem and resolve it promptly and tactfully.
Freedom to Act:
The incumbent performs tasks under the direction of a certified teacher and responds to day-to-day needs, answer questions, and respond to emergent issues. Non-emergent issues are discussed with the Teacher or Building Principal. The incumbent takes initiative to ensure completion of all tasks and will adjust priorities to accommodate competing workload demands. All employees must comply with department and institution procedures and policies, Fargo Public School policies and procedures, as well as local, state and federal laws, regulations, guidelines and business and industry standards.
