Job Description The Advanced Research in Computing and AI Division (ARCAID) within the Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL) seeks a Student Assistant in the role of Machine Learning Engineer starting Fall 2026. This position involves both the development of models at a high level and the implementation of those models in a laboratory setting.
Duties include reading and understanding current research in specific areas of interest, using conventional tools and frameworks to train models and carry out experiments with them, and working at the interface between high-level programming and low-level hardware to deploy these models onto devices that perform real-time inference with streaming sensor data. Students will integrate feedback from laboratory experiments and will be expected to manipulate data sets that are simulated, received from others, or generated by sensor devices. Data curation and management skills are a plus.
This opportunity is in-person, with offices located in the CODA building of Tech Square in Midtown Atlanta. The ARCAID division maintains a collaborative environment with student researchers of all levels interacting in a shared space.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Experience with Python
Familiarity with Pytorch
Knowledge of software engineering practice including tools like git
Familiarity with Linux and Bash
Exposure to basic networking tools and concepts
Familiarity with common tools and procedures in machine learning, from data collection and cleaning to training and inference
Coursework in machine learning
Student Assistant
Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or another related STEM discipline
Must be registered for at least 6 credit hours with your university
3.5 or higher cumulative GPA
Preferred Qualifications
At least one year of experience using Linux in a classroom or professional setting
Knowledge of networking concepts
Expertise using git and version control SAAS, such as Gitlab or Github, as demonstrated by knowledge of pipelines, actions, and the general CI workflow
Experience building and deploying software in a Linux cluster environmentExperience with Linux cluster management software like Slurm (preferred) or PBS and associated tools like Environment Modules
Exposure to working directly with edge hardware, ASICs, FPGAs, or other low-level hardware
Exposure to digital logic
Significant participation in machine learning projects, whether in a classroom or professional setting, and the ability to speak clearly to the technical aspects of those projects
Hours per Week 10-20 hours per week
U.S. Citizenship Requirements Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
