Living in Detroit
Detroit is a city on the rise, blending Midwestern affordability with big-city culture. Once the heart of American manufacturing, the city has reinvented itself over the past decade with a revitalized downtown, a lively riverfront, and a growing scene of restaurants, breweries, and cultural spaces.
For physicians and families, Detroit offers a rare combination: an affordable cost of living paired with major-metro amenities. Housing is remarkably accessible compared to coastal cities, whether you prefer a downtown loft or a home in one of the family-friendly suburbs like Birmingham, Royal Oak, or Grosse Pointe.
The city's cultural scene punches above its weight - the Detroit Institute of Arts, Motown's musical legacy, a thriving food scene, and four major professional sports teams all call Detroit home. Belle Isle Park offers a riverfront escape minutes from downtown, and the Great Lakes and northern Michigan are an easy drive away. Detroit is also a hub for healthcare and higher education, home to major academic medical centers and a strong residency pipeline - meaning physicians here join a serious, well-supported clinical community. With affordability, culture, and a strong sense of community, Detroit is a compelling place to build both a career and a life.
