Position Overview: As our Systems Engineering Manager, you will lead a dynamic and growing team of approximately 12 Systems Engineers at our Advanced Technologies office in Lynchburg, Virginia. This position offers relocation benefits.
Location: This position is based on-site in Lynchburg, VA at the Advanced Technologies Office. There is a strong preference for full onsite availability.
Your Day to Day as a Systems Engineering Manager:
- Team Leadership: Foster a supportive and collaborative team culture, and oversee the growth and structure of the department, including the assignment of supervisors for various teams.
- Build and maintain strong relationships across the Engineering organization and with external partners and stakeholders.
- Systems Engineering Support: Develop and maintain product and system requirements. Collaborate with Chief Engineers and domain experts to develop, design and maintain overall product architectures. Define and manage product and system interfaces. Create comprehensive verification and validation (V&V) plans for products and systems. Develop and execute new and novel project and process plans, implement policies and procedures and set operational goals.
- Resource Management: Determine staffing requirements and adjust staffing levels as necessary to ensure the workforce is appropriately staffed with qualified individuals. Ensure department staff have the necessary resources to perform their assignments. Support Systems Engineering work planning for projects and conduct subject matter expert reviews.
- Staff Development: Mentor and develop department staff through training, feedback, and work assignments. Provide career counseling for everyone, including performance evaluations and career discussions throughout the year. Monitor performance goals and provide constructive feedback to direct reports.
- Technical risk management: Identify and assess potential technical risk in projects and systems. Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies and contingency plans.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: A bachelor's, master's, or Doctor of Science degree in engineering, physics, chemistry, or mathematics is required.
- Experience: A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in Nuclear and/or Aerospace industry is required. A minimum of five (5) years of experience mentoring, coaching, guiding and leading teams is required. A minimum of three (3) years in a Systems Engineering role is required. Must have demonstrated experience in one or more areas of designing, developing, testing, or delivery of systems throughout a program's development life cycle. Must have knowledge of military and/or NASA component specifications, design processes, and hardware test/verification procedures. Must have demonstrated experience or interest in Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). Must have demonstrated leadership for driving issue resolution and mitigating technical risk.
- Skills: Must have proven ability to forge effective working relationships across various organizational levels. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated through technical reports and presentations. Must have Earned Value Management experience. Must have experience with DOORs and/or Cameo.
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Clearance: Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with high-temperature gas reactor technologies.
- Understanding of Systems Engineering processes and standards, such as the INCOSE Handbook, ISO/IEC/IEEE-15288, DOD Systems Engineering Guidebook, and NASA/SP-6105.
- Knowledge of quality program requirements including ISO 9001, AS9100, and NQA-1.
- Experience working with U.S. Government customers (e.g., DOD, DOE, NASA).

Pay: $99,000.00 - $157,000.00 The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $99,000.00 and $157,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
