Must-Have: Two-year Medical Laboratory Technician degree required. Four-year degree from an accredited program or two-year degree from an accredited program with MT AAB Certification recognized required. Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail required.
Description: The Medical Lab Technologist, under supervision, performs laboratory tests and procedures as requested. Responsible for performing additional duties in one of the six sections: Hematology, Microbiology, Serology, Blood Gas/Point of Care, Chemistry, or Blood Bank. Maintains supply inventory for the assigned section. Performs weekly and monthly maintenance on section analyzers. Assists in implementing new analyzers by running validations, attending advance training, and training colleagues on new tests/analyzers. Updates and reviews section policies and procedures yearly. Performs six-month correlations in the assigned section. Performs calibration and linearity of tests in the section when necessary. Conducts data review and reporting. Completes section staff's annual competency assessments. Reviews proficiency test results and investigates failed results. Educates staff to ensure accurate results for future proficiency samples. Performs laboratory tests in hematology, coagulation, chemistry, blood gas, serology, blood bank, and microbiology. Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective actions. Calls critical test results to responsible personnel immediately as per established criteria. Prepares test reports legibly. Initials and dates own work performed. Reviews reports for clerical accuracy and clinical indications. Runs quality-control tests according to established procedures to ensure lab operates within established ranges. Analyzes quality-control data and takes corrective action when results fall outside acceptable limits. Documents all actions taken. Holds patient results until out-of-control situations are resolved. Reports unresolved situations to the Section Lead or Laboratory Director. Observes and follows department preventive maintenance schedules. Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, and problems with corrective actions taken. Recognizes, analyzes, and resolves instrument and clinical problems. Provides assistance to colleagues in problem resolution. Reports unresolved instrument or clinical issues to the Section Lead. Provides in-service training to other personnel and students. Instructs in laboratory bench procedures and clinical application of test results. Assures comprehension of procedures and evaluates troubleshooting techniques. Documents training completion. Notifies the Section Lead when low on supplies. Answers phone calls from patients and outside providers for test information. Receives and checks in supplies, ensuring all packages are dated and matched with packing slips. Maintains files pertinent to the laboratory area. Participates in the preparation and presentation of continuing education programs. Observes all laboratory and hospital policies and safety practices. Maintains a neat and clean work area and restocks daily supplies. Performs specimen collection and processing duties as needed. Attends collections to assist physicians in specimen preparation. Performs other duties as requested.
