About the Role Backend engineers design, build, operate, and maintain the various cloud services that power Hinge. You’ll solve complex technical challenges and own a significant portion of the software stack that allows millions of users to find meaningful connections. You’ll write high-quality code, design reliable systems, and operate the software that you build by taking part in on‑call. As a backend engineer, you’ll also be part of a diverse cross‑functional team that includes partners in Product, Data Science, ML, iOS, Android, and Data Engineering. You’ll have a hand in defining and implementing your team's technical strategy.
Responsibilities
Design and build RESTful APIs for mobile clients.
Taking part in the backend on‑call rotation (1 whole week, every 8‑11 weeks).
Design and build microservices that run on Kubernetes.
Design and build distributed systems in Go, using cloud infrastructure and platform service components.
Own the technical design, implementation, and success of your projects.
Collaborate across teams, promoting a culture of inclusivity, growth, and strong cross‑functional communication.
What We're Looking For
5+ years of industry experience as a backend/service engineer.
4+ years of experience working in a cloud environment such as GCP, AWS, Azure.
Strong programming skills:
Proficiency with Go and Python is a bonus!
System Design & Architecture:
A deep understanding of distributed computing concepts, event based architecture, and cloud design patterns.
Collaboration and Communication skills:
Solid writing skills paired with the ability to clearly communicate complex ideas to teammates from both technical and non‑technical backgrounds.
Cloud Technologies:
Proficiency with Kubernetes, OpenTelemetry, gRPC/Protobuf, Argo, Kafka, etc.
Salary Range $186,000.00 - $223,000.00 per year salary. Factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, job-related skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations may influence base pay offered. This salary range is reflective of a position based in New York City.
