Principal Software Engineer, Elasticsearch - Search team. Focuses on enhancing vector similarity search functionality within Elasticsearch, covering design and implementation of new vector search features, enhancements to existing functionality, and bug resolution. Responsibilities
Lead initiatives within Elasticsearch to produce an industry‑leading vector database offering, delivering speed and relevance in search. Contribute to Elasticsearch full time by building new search features, fixing bugs, and improving code understandability. Invent or implement new algorithms or data structures, and in some cases work close to the operating system and hardware. Work with a globally distributed team of experienced engineers focused on vector search capabilities. Be the expert on how Elasticsearch implements vector similarity for search relevance and be the go‑to resource for questions in this area. Work with community members worldwide on issues and pull requests, triaging and handling them. Write idiomatic modern Java, as Elasticsearch is 99.8% Java. Qualifications
Implemented novel techniques in vector similarity on a search platform with a large user base or contributed to academic research in vector similarity information retrieval. Professional experience with vector similarity and vector databases, using HNSW, IVF, or other relevant algorithms and libraries at scale. Strong skills in core Java, familiar with the standard library of data structures and concurrency constructs, lambdas. High level of autonomy, able to take projects from design through to development with guidance. Comfortable with collaborative development, giving and receiving feedback, especially in asynchronous internet collaboration. Experience with data storage technologies such as Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Bonus Points
Built things with Elasticsearch before. Worked with open source projects and familiar with source control and continuous integration workflows. Experience designing, leading and owning cross‑functional initiatives. Experience with data storage technology. Compensation
Base salary only: €80,400 – €127,200 EUR per year. Benefits
