Lab & Quality Supervisor

ERCO Worldwide has operated for over 100 years, focused largely on the production and supply of in-organic products along with technology for the production of chlorine dioxide. Today, ERCO's major business areas include sodium chlorate, chlor-alkali products, sodium chlorite, and chlorine dioxide technology. The ERCO business serves a number of key customer segments including pulp and paper, food, energy, agriculture, water treatment, airport de-icing, fertilizers and specialty chemicals.

ERCO Worldwide is looking for a Lab & Quality Supervisor to join our Port Edwards team! The successful candidate will provide leadership and direction in laboratory and product quality assurance, lab instrumentation troubleshooting, and technical customer support. This supervisor will oversee a team of four Laboratory Technicians (and occasional interns) and coach operators to ensure all analytical procedures are performed in accordance with ERCO standards and practices. The role is responsible for maintaining compliance with ISO 9001 quality requirements, industrial health and safety regulations, and the Food Safety program. Additionally, the supervisor will support the Environmental/Technical Manager with environmental compliance activities, including sampling, monitoring, and data analysis.

The Role:

Process Control & Management of the Day-to-Day Operation of the Plant Analytical Lab

  • Lead a Team of 4 Lab Technicians (Process Chemists)
  • Ensure laboratory compliance with safety & environmental standards and regulations
  • Administer all laboratory & hygiene regulatory reporting protocols to meet deadlines provided in regulations & permits
  • Champion Lab Housekeeping for direct reports
  • Administer a safety program for lab specific issues
  • Annually certify lab procedures per environmental regulations
  • Schedule analytical work to address the needs of production process & product distribution
  • Maintain the plant LIMS system to support plant activities and ensure results are accessible and auditable

Quality Assurance/Product Quality Monitoring

  • Serve as Quality Assurance Coordinator and Lead Auditor for Plant ISO 9001 compliance.
  • Development & maintenance of plant analytical methods
  • Manage Lab equipment to ensure reliable results
  • Specify equipment & materials for environmental & lab processes to ensure reliability
  • Monitor lab & environmental equipment reliability to determine optimum life through PM's
  • Manage lab equipment calibration for critical equipment per ISO standards & environmental compliance
  • Maintain Food Safety Program (FSMA) compliance

Technical Service

  • Technical support for customers, ERCO customer service, & ERCO sales group on the safe use, handling, transportation & disposition of Chlor-Alkali products supplied by ERCO Worldwide (USA). The position evaluates & resolves customer complaints, issues & problems related to the use & performance of products to mutual satisfaction & in a way that prevents recurrence of the problem.
  • Co-ordinates with the Corporate Logistics Compliance Department on customer education of Responsible Care Product Stewardship related to environment & health risk associated with the handling & use of products
  • Supports customers' needs by analyzing Customer Opportunity Reports that are generated against the Chlor-Alkali division & report metrics to the Chlor-Alkali business unit.

The Person:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant fieldsuch as Inorganic Chemistryor equivalent specialization with experience in analytical laboratory instrumentation (e.g., ICP, IC, GC, automated and manual titration, AA, pH, and conductivity) is required.
  • A minimum of 610 years of proven experience managing a manufacturing laboratory, including supervising teams of fewer than five employees. Experience supporting operations and maintenance teams in identifying causes and corrective actions related to previously unknown residues or chemical byproducts is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience working with R&D or external laboratories to assist plant personnel in interpreting analytical results is required.
  • Proven work experience leading, supervising and coaching lab technicians.
  • Experience with FSMA compliance and LIMS database systems is required.
  • Certification or experience as an ISO Internal Auditor is required, with ISO 9001 being preferred.
