BEPC is seeking a highly motivated Senior Systems Engineer to join our client’s site in Santa Clara, CA. This role will support Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) products within the Systems Development Group. The candidate will be a hands‑on key contributor in feasibility, development, customer support, and integration phases of end‑to‑end NGS solutions, according to customer and product requirements, and applicable regulatory and quality standards. In addition, this role maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development.
The position supports the development of new technologies and workflows designed to make genetic testing easy, reliable, and affordable. These technologies are intended for use in a wide range of applications, including newborn disease screening and the diagnosis of cancers and infectious diseases. The role involves learning and operating a single‑molecule sequencing platform, developing operating protocols, designing and performing wet‑lab experiments, interpreting experimental results, and collaborating within a multidisciplinary team environment.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Become an expert in the operation of the single‑molecule sequencing platform.
Perform sample preparation, library preparation, sequencing, and sequencing‑related experiments on a daily basis.
Analyze and interpret experimental data.
Provide general support for research and development activities.
Support customers by monitoring runs, documenting and communicating defects, and following escalation paths.
Contribute to platform verification by executing, analyzing, and interpreting verification study results.
Perform all work using best laboratory practices and maintain well‑organized documentation of work and progress.
Assist engineers with hardware design through testing of subcomponents.
Analyze data, derive conclusions, document findings, write SOPs, and prepare reports for internal sharing.
Design and execute strong experimental plans while working independently.
Troubleshoot instrument failures and seek specialized assistance as needed.
Develop and deploy technologies including sample extraction, library preparation, and sequencing.
Develop, execute, and document verification and validation test cases ensuring full requirements coverage.
Support customer activities including monitoring runs, early meetings to discuss defects and results, QC of reagents and configurations, and potential travel to customer sites.
Support the instrument fleet to learn troubleshooting techniques and assist R&D and customer support.
Perform system integration and testing and verify system performance through simulations, tests, and measurements.
Assess results for applicability, validity, and conformance to product requirements.
Work independently with general management direction to drive product development and continuous improvement.
Keep supervisors and project leaders informed of project status and significant findings.
Qualifications:
B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in science, chemistry, or engineering.
1–5 years of experience, depending on educational background.
Previous laboratory experience required.
Previous experience with PCR required.
Familiarity with MATLAB, GIT, Python, or similar tools for data analysis and/or automation.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams and across scientific disciplines.
Passionate, self‑motivated, and eager to acquire on‑the‑job training.
Preferred Qualifications:
Hands‑on experience with DNA sequencing, including raw sample preparation, nucleic acid extraction, library preparation, and NGS sequencing.
Experience with prototype instruments.
Experience with laboratory devices and instrumentation, including PCR and automation.
Experience in biotechnology or medical device development.
Strong understanding of DNA and molecular biology.
3+ years of hands‑on DNA sequencing experience.
Knowledge of all phases of the NGS workflow, including nucleic acid chemistry and primer design technologies.
Proven hands‑on troubleshooting experience in wet bench workflows on NGS platforms.
Experience with statistical tools (e.g., Python or JMP), regression analysis, ANOVA, Design of Experiments, and statistical process control.
Experience with semiconductor‑based sensing devices or microfluidic devices.
Knowledge of surface chemistry.
Strong analytical, problem‑solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
