Job Description – Design Specialist – Bridge (2601388)
TxDOT San Antonio District’s Bridge Design section is looking for a talented and motivated Design Specialist to serve as the primary design and drafting lead for bridge, retaining wall, and bridge repair projects in the San Antonio District. In this role, you’ll play a key part in shaping critical infrastructure by producing high-quality plans, developing detailed design drawings, and supporting engineering teams from concept through delivery.
The ideal candidate brings experience in bridge drafting, strong attention to detail, and a passion for work that directly impacts the safety and mobility of the traveling public, while working collaboratively with a team of dedicated professionals.

Minimum Salary: 45,521.00
Maximum Salary: 71,055.00

Travel: Yes, up to 10% of the time
Shift: Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM (Onsite)

Key Responsibilities
Perform advanced and specialized drafting, calculations, and design work.
Conduct field work and use automated systems to learn specialized techniques.
Use additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal lighting design, retaining walls and building design.
Perform advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develop graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
Review entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education : High School Graduate or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience : 6 years of drafting, design, and plan preparation (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
Licenses and Certifications : Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Technical Skills
Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures.
Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities.
Interactive graphic and design information systems.
Applicable computer software applications and hardware.
Building code standards and industry guidelines.
Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
Performing advanced drafting.
Writing, reviewing, and revising documents to include engineering notes, specifications, standards and procedures.
Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems.
Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
Subject to hazards – moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
Required to wear protective gear – respirator, hard hat, or other device.
Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools.
Talking – expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
Hearing – perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication.
Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
Close Visual Acuity – work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts.
This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical.
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions; this is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
Please note that the Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation (49 CFR Part 40, 40.151(e)) does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
