Amazon Web Services is seeking a Sr. Electrical Engineer to become part of a global engineering team, responsible for the design and continuous innovation of our rapidly expanding data center footprint. Engineers at Amazon work to design resilient, cost‑effective electrical distribution systems to achieve world‑class uptime for our customers. We justify and communicate technical decisions to senior management and drive continuous advancements and improvements with our designs.
Responsibilities
Lead within the group and collaborate with internal and external teams that support the data center.
Work with internal teams to understand user requirements.
Participate in site selection reviews.
Design data center substations and collaborate with other disciplines to produce construction document sets.
Create designs that meet or exceed quality requirements and stay within budget.
Work with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify appropriate electrical equipment.
Work with local utilities to understand and define site utility requirements.
Work with local agencies having jurisdiction to ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes.
Review and approve equipment submittals.
Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to and during construction phases.
Work with commissioning teams to test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
Manage concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
Travel to sites for reviews, conduct onsite engineering evaluations, electrical system audits, and startup as needed.
Deliver creative, out‑of‑the‑box solutions.
Basic Qualifications
6+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission‑critical facilities (data centers, power generation, or oil and gas).
Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
Experience with design or construction administration of electrical distribution systems ranging from low to high voltage.
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or 12+ years of related electrical experience, including a minimum of 5 years of substation design experience.
Cumulative 7+ years of industrial or commercial electrical design experience.
4+ years of experience developing design documentation (plans, specifications, etc.) for construction and/or permitting.
Preferred Qualifications
3+ years of experience directly related to substation design supporting data center or mission‑critical facilities.
Professional Engineering License.
Excellent understanding of the National Electrical Code.
Solid understanding of critical data center electrical equipment.
Leadership and problem‑solving skills; highly dependable and motivated.
Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment.
Ability to carry new design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment/construction.
Ability to think outside the box to develop cost‑effective solutions without compromising quality, reliability, or maintainability.
Capacity to perform complex business‑case analysis and present justification to senior management.
Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and commitment to high quality standards.
Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches.
Basic understanding of mechanical equipment and system design.
Experience negotiating and managing consultant relationships.
Experience with fast‑track design/build projects and/or multiple significant upgrade projects.
Experience with large‑scale technical operations or compute farms.
Knowledge of building codes and regulations (Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, OSHA).
Compensation Salary ranges (USD annually):
Columbus, OH – $136,600.00 – $184,800.00
Austin, TX – $136,600.00 – $184,800.00
Herndon, VA – $136,600.00 – $184,800.00
Seattle, WA – $136,600.00 – $184,800.00
