Description This position is responsible for providing advanced civil/structural engineering support for a nuclear generating station, with a focus on the design, analysis, and modification of safety-related and non-safety-related structures and components. The role requires deep technical expertise and the ability to independently solve complex engineering problems while ensuring compliance with strict nuclear safety and regulatory standards.
The Engineer III operates with minimal supervision, supports plant reliability and long-term asset integrity, and plays a key role in maintaining design basis and configuration control for civil/structural systems.
Key Responsibilities
Perform advanced civil and structural engineering analyses for nuclear plant structures, including concrete, steel, seismic, and foundation systems
Develop and review design change packages, calculations, drawings, and specifications in accordance with plant procedures and regulatory requirements
Evaluate existing structures for load capacity, seismic qualification, environmental effects, and long-term degradation mechanisms
Support structural inspections, condition assessments, and aging management programs
Provide technical support for plant modifications, upgrades, and capital projects
Troubleshoot structural and civil-related issues impacting plant systems, including root cause analysis and corrective action development
Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., ACI, AISC, ASCE) and nuclear regulatory requirements, including NRC guidelines
Maintain and support configuration control by ensuring accuracy of design basis documents and plant records
Interface with operations, maintenance, and project teams to support safe and reliable plant operation
Participate in refueling outages, including planning, field support, and post-outage evaluations
Support corrective action programs, including condition reports, apparent/root cause evaluations, and continuous improvement initiatives
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers
Assist with vendor oversight, including review of contractor calculations, drawings, and technical submittals
Support regulatory audits, inspections, and engineering reviews as required
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
Minimum of 10-15 years of relevant civil/structural engineering experience, preferably in nuclear, power generation, or other highly regulated industries
Strong knowledge of structural analysis, design methods, and engineering fundamentals
Experience developing engineering calculations, design change packages, and technical documentation
Demonstrated ability to work independently and solve complex technical problems
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain
Prior experience at a nuclear generating station or with nuclear design standards
Familiarity with NRC regulations, nuclear quality assurance standards (e.g., Appendix B), and design control processes
Experience with seismic analysis and qualification of structures and components
Knowledge of finite element analysis tools and structural modeling software
Experience supporting plant outages and field implementation of design changes
Additional Requirements
Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access to a nuclear facility
Willingness to support outage schedules, including extended hours, nights, and weekends as needed
Strong commitment to nuclear safety culture, procedural adherence, and quality standards
