Lab Safety Assistant The Lab Safety Assistant is responsible for assisting in the organization and preparation of science labs on the main campus and Metro Center. The lab assistant also assists instructors during labs. Essential Duties or Responsibilities The essential duties and primary responsibilities below are intended to describe the general requirements of this job and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties. Other related duties which may be required by the Math & Science Department Chair (duties that may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but are generally within the occupational series and responsibility level associated with the employee's class of work) Laboratory Operations and Support
Prepare the labs for use by full- and part-time instructors. Clean and organize all labs. Assist instructors during labs, as needed. Assist instructors in proctoring exams when needed. Maintain inventory and order supplies, equipment, chemicals, specimens, glassware, and other items for all labs.
Safety, Compliance, and Risk Management
Attend lab safety training to keep abreast of chemical safety guidelines. Act as the Lab Safety Officer (OSHA compliant) for the Math and Science Division. Develop and monitor the SCC Hygiene Plan (Procedures for handling chemicals, training documentation for lab and chemical safety, and Lab Safety Guide, etc.). Develop and coordinate the Chemical Disposal Plan in conjunction with state and federal regulations. Responsible for the safety of science labs, including monitoring each extension facility for safety.
Training and Instructional Support
Provide training for lab safety, blood-borne pathogens, and infectious disease control. Assist faculty in assessing students and documenting academic achievement.
Professional Responsibilities
Possess or receive Chemical Hygiene Officer Certification (within six months of hire date)
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Biological Science, Chemistry, or a closely related field. One to two years of experience in a laboratory setting, preferably in an academic environment. Current knowledge of, and ability to apply, relevant local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA standards for chemical handling and disposal.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of laboratory procedures, safety regulations, and chemical handling protocols. Skill in organizing, preparing, and maintaining laboratory spaces and scientific equipment. Ability to interpret and apply OSHA, state, and federal safety guidelines. Effective interpersonal and communication skills to support faculty, staff, and students. Ability to develop and deliver safety training sessions and maintain related records. Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in a safety-critical environment.
