Fusion Device Mechanical Hardware Design Leader

We are a fusion power company based in Everett, WA, with the mission to build the world's first fusion power plant, enabling a future with unlimited clean electricity. Our vision is a world with clean, reliable, and affordable energy for everyone.

Since Helion's founding in 2013, we have raised over $1 billion from long-time investors such as Sam Altman, Mithril, and Capricorn Investment Group as well as new investors SoftBank and Lightspeed to propel us forward. Our last prototype, Trenta, completed 10,000 high-power pulses and reached plasma temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius (9 keV). We are now operating Polaris, our next prototype on the path to the world's first fusion power plant.

This is a pivotal time to join Helion. You will tackle real-world challenges with a team that prizes urgency, rigor, ownership, and a commitment to delivering hard truths values essential to achieving what no one has before. You will lead the mechanical hardware design efforts for Helion's fusion devices. Your role will focus on solving complex, high-impact problems that influence system performance, while also growing a high-performing engineering team. You will establish technical standards, drive execution, and shape design processes to increase the speed and quality of innovation. You will report to the Director of Mechanical Engineering and this is an onsite role located at our Everett, WA office.

You will:

  • Grow and mentor a team of multidisciplinary mechanical engineers
  • Oversee design of machine architecture, high-performance pulsed power mechanical systems, structural designs, and thermal management systems
  • Drive schedule ownership and optimization across the team to accelerate milestones
  • Lead design, analysis, and manufacturing process improvements to increase reliability, performance, and throughput
  • Collaborate with Electrical, Research, Science, and Controls teams to derive requirements and meet program goals

Required skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • 5+ years of engineering experience, including 2+ years in an engineering management role
  • Demonstrated ability to grow engineers and impact career development
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams with full-scope project ownership
  • Proven ability to manage complex engineering projects with schedule accountability
  • Hands-on exposure to multiple engineering disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, and fluids
  • Ability to apply engineering first-principles and structured problem-solving to technical challenges
