Systems Administrator The Systems Administrator maintains the server and network infrastructure according to current best practices; maintains the VoIP system, switches, wireless, e‑mail, and spam systems; manages patch/update for workstations and servers; troubleshoots hardware and software problems; assists the ITS Director in providing computer and server hardware and software solutions and in designing, installing, and configuring server and network infrastructure and related equipment; provides access, training, and usage of computer software and facilities as required. This person must be customer‑service oriented and responsive to employee and student needs and problems. Some evening and weekend work is required.
Responsibilities
Administers all servers, LAN, WAN, and wireless networks including installation, configuration, and maintenance.
Administers Microsoft Active Directory, group policies, and creates and edits objects.
Maintains daily backups for all servers and systems (including network switches). Upgrades software with patches and new versions on a regular rotation.
Coordinates and communicates all security concerns and planned changes with the Director before implementation using the approved change control procedure.
Implements security solutions for the server and network infrastructure as identified by the Director.
Creates and maintains documentation for the support, troubleshooting, and installation of all server hardware and software.
Reviews workstation standards and configurations to ensure compliance with system standards and security policies.
Serves as a resource to ITS Technicians and other ITS administrators for installation, optimization, and technical support for all server and software applications. Provides direction and training to ITS Technicians regarding server usage.
Arranges outside repairs when economically feasible and develops sources for purchasing parts efficiently and economically.
Advises faculty and staff concerning the purchase of server or network related hardware and software. Trains users on new server software and operating systems as needed.
Maintains network print management and sharing services.
Administers the student housing network including wired and wireless networks.
Maintains and updates knowledge of network cabling and termination, fiber optics, and network diagnostic and performance applications.
Stays up to date with current trends in the field regarding security policies, cloud infrastructure, and security breaches.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or a closely related field.
Two years of relevant work experience in the computer technical area, including workstation, server, Active Directory, Exchange, internet/intranet servers, systems security, and significant repair and troubleshooting experience.
In‑depth technical knowledge and experience with command line interfaces, Windows Server operating systems, and other popular software applications, Active Directory domains, Exchange email systems, databases, and associated hardware and peripherals.
Significant training and experience with network and systems security and Microsoft domains, blade server technologies, and group policy objects.
Working knowledge of anti‑virus/spyware software and ability to recognize and eradicate malicious server activity.
Ability to set up, service, troubleshoot, maintain and repair server‑related hardware of various configurations.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to work well with a wide variety of College employees and students in the educational setting of the community college.
Strong researching ability.
Experience in, or the ability to work, in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Microsoft and Linux server environments.
Experience with Cisco and Brocade CLI.
Experience with VMWare and Hyper‑V virtualization technology.
Experience with, or knowledge of, Veeam Backup Server installation and administration.
Experience providing server support in a large enterprise environment, preferably academic.
