Job Description Job Summary: The Content Strategist / Information Architect is responsible for defining the content scope, structure, and reduction strategy for a web modernization initiative during the initial strategy and scoping phase. This role focuses on determining what content should exist, how it should be organized, and what should be retired or deferred, ensuring recommendations are grounded in a realistic understanding of the content footprint, governance model, and public‑sector usability expectations. The strategist plays a crucial role in ensuring the project roadmap reflects manageable content scope, reduced risk, and faster time to value. Location: Maryland, United States.
Responsibilities
Assess the current content landscape at a strategic level, including volume, types, and high‑risk categories.
Define a content footprint reduction strategy aligned with project goals, establishing criteria for retention, consolidation, retirement, or deferral.
Define a high‑level information architecture direction, including primary navigation structure, content grouping, and taxonomy principles.
Assess current content ownership and governance models, identifying gaps or risks related to accountability, review cycles, and approval workflows.
Ensure content strategy aligns with platform content modeling constraints, accessibility expectations, and plain‑language standards.
Advise on content sequencing for the project roadmap, identifying content suitable for early phases, deferral, or non‑migration.
Collaborate with UX Lead, Lead BA, and Solution Architect to align content decisions across deliverables.
Contribute content‑related inputs to project deliverables, ensuring decisions are documented, traceable, and defensible.
Required Skills & Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Information Science, Digital Media, or a related field.
8–10+ years of experience in content strategy, information architecture, or digital content planning.
Demonstrated experience supporting government or large‑scale public‑sector websites.
Experience defining content scope and IA during early strategy or planning phases.
Familiarity with CMS‑driven content models (Drupal preferred).
Content strategy and footprint reduction.
Information architecture and taxonomy design.
Public‑sector usability and plain‑language principles.
Content governance assessment.
Accessibility‑aware content planning.
Roadmap and pilot content sequencing.
Documentation and traceability.
Demonstrated senior‑level experience in content strategy and IA (certification may be substituted with experience).
