Systems Administrator (4698C) - BSL/EPS This position is a joint recruitment effort between the Berkeley Seismology Lab (BSL) and the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS). The selected hire will work full‑time hours, with 50% of their time dedicated to BSL and 50% to EPS. Responsibilities include supporting IT infrastructure—Linux servers, storage systems, tape backups, printers, AV equipment, kiosks, and laptops—for a diverse community of staff, faculty, students, and researchers. The role also serves as the local IT security and networking point of contact for the campus IT group and acts as the EPS technical support representative. Responsibilities Provides front‑line tech support and consulting for users and determines appropriate actions, escalating when necessary. Maintains Linux servers, storage subsystems, and hardware infrastructure; inventories hardware, handles failures, works with vendor support, and manages support contracts. Administers IT systems and services including user accounts, space allocation, mailing lists, and tape backups; monitors resource use and reports on growth. Recommends and purchases computer hardware and supplies such as laptops, cables, ink/toner, and spare parts. Acts as local network and security point of contact; responds to incidents, coaches users on security best practices, and assists with networking needs. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience/training. Clear communication of technical information to a variety of roles; calm, friendly user interaction. Self‑motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team, problem‑solving and learning effectively. Ability to recommend and apply technologies, systems, and services to meet user requests. Experience with Linux system operations, configuration, and management. Experience writing and editing moderately complex scripts for maintenance and administration. Understanding of system performance monitoring and corrective actions. Understanding of how system management actions affect users and related functions. Knowledge of computer security best practices and policies. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of computer peripherals such as AV equipment, plotters, and scanners. Knowledge of facilities management, including power and cooling. Salary & Benefits Salary range is $43.66 to $57.34 per hour (full range $43.66 to $65.73). Position is FLSA Non‑exempt, paid biweekly, and eligible for full benefits. Conviction History Background This designated position requires fingerprinting and a background check.
