Overview Customer Design Technician – Associate level at American Electric Power (AEP). Responsibilities Apply technical knowledge from an Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronic/Civil/Mechanical Engineering Technology to routine design tasks. Assist in the planning, engineering, design, analysis, research, development, testing, construction, maintenance, and operation of company equipment and facilities. Support defined portions of routine problems, seeking assistance from higher‑level employees when needed. Plan work in accordance with AEP standard planning practices, prioritizing routine work to meet company demands and maintaining accurate records. Use technical knowledge to resolve problems encountered in assigned work, seeking opportunities to improve processes and increase job knowledge and technical skills. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with internal and external customers; assist in preparing technical reports and papers. Demonstrate teamwork, openness, and a friendly, sincere manner in interactions with colleagues and customers. Develop decision‑making skills based on sound judgment and job knowledge; understand roles and responsibilities of the local organizational unit. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of related utility industry work experience, OR an Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronic/Civil/Mechanical Engineering Technology with at least 2 years of related utility work experience. Valid driver’s license. Physical Demands Variable by location or territory; typical duties include walking various terrains in adverse conditions, patrolling distribution power lines, carrying and handling measuring sticks and switching sticks (up to 11lb), and using a brush axe or machete (2‑6lb) to clear brush during survey work. The job is rated Light Work, requiring walking or standing for a significant degree or pushing/pulling materials at a production rate pace. Compensation Associate level: $30.50 – $32.50 per hour. Senior level: $41.50 – $45.50 per hour.
