Network Engineer Associate (NEA) – full‑time position located at Fort Wainwright, AK. Job Details
Veterans First Initiative, LLC (VFI) is a U.S. Government Contractor and IT Services Integrator that delivers Network, Unified Communications, Information Technology, and Cybersecurity Engineering and Infrastructure Solutions worldwide. VFI is certified by the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Service‑Disabled Veteran‑Owned Small Business (SDVOSB). Duties and Responsibilities
The NEA assists in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues related to network and routing protocols at all OSI layers using diagnostic and network administration tools such as the DHA Network Monitoring System (Check_MK), DHA Two‑Factor Authentication (2FA) Management Authentication Service (Cisco ISE), DHA Network Logging Service (Splunk), DHA Network Device Configuration Backup System (HPNA), and DHA Remote Access Terminal Service (HAL). They also monitor Management Information Blocks (MIB) and MRTG to maintain high performance and minimal downtime. Responsibilities include learning and applying LAN/WAN security concepts, configuring network firewalls, VPN devices, and IDSs to protect MTF systems. The NEA provides technical support for diagnostic utilities on various servers (e.g., DBSS, CHCS, AHLTA, MHS GENESIS, DMLSS) and operating systems, identifies bottlenecks, evaluates problems, and implements actions such as device reconfiguration or replacement. Reviewing and analyzing network infrastructure surveys, WLAN heat maps, floor plans, cable drop placement and counts, data analysis, network design, and implementation as part of an engineering team to meet customer requirements. Qualifications
Compliance with DoD Directive 8570.01 is required – IAT Level II or equivalent certification per DoD 8570.01‑M. Experience
Solid foundational knowledge of TCP/IP, HTTP, SHTTP, SMTP, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, EIGRP, OSPF, PPP, HDLC, V.35, RS‑449 and the 802.2, 802.3, 802.5, 802.10, 802.11, 802.3u, and 802.3z communications standards. Experience troubleshooting synchronous and asynchronous communications, Ethernet configurations, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI, microwave, satellite communications, OTDR, cable testers, and network sniffers. Mid‑level experience in routed and switched LAN environments running Microsoft Windows, Active Directory, UNIX, OpenVMS, routers, switches, terminal servers, and long‑haul circuits such as T1–T3, satellite, and WAN connectivity. Education
Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline such as Computer Science and 4 years of related experience; or Certification from a technical/vocational school and 8 years of related experience. Other Skills
Desirable experience with DoD Health Care Information Systems, Windows networks, Cisco, Ruckus/Brocade, Juniper, etc. Desirable certifications: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Security+CE, and any entry‑level network core certification. Preparation to achieve public trust level security clearance. Background
An Automated Data Processing (ADP) sensitivity level determination is required for this position. Communication Skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills to present information effectively to government officials and medical professionals. Clearance
