Position Summary High Performance Computing (HPC) Systems Administrator at NYU Langone Health (NYULH). The role leverages technical expertise to collaborate with HPC team, scientists and software engineers supporting computational needs of world‑class researchers in clinical and basic science. Reports to Director of NYULH HPC Facility and collaborates closely with facility staff, principal investigators, research labs, core facilities, individual scientists and students. Primary responsibilities include system administration, monitoring, troubleshooting, software maintenance, installations, and optimization of advanced computing systems and infrastructure.
Job Responsibilities
Deploy, administer, and monitor Linux‑based HPC clusters and petascale storage systems.
Install, maintain, and upgrade scientific software, libraries, and licensed applications.
Troubleshoot and resolve system, hardware, and application issues across HPC environments.
Develop and maintain scripts for system administration, monitoring, reporting, and data pipeline optimization.
Provide technical support to researchers, assist with project execution, benchmarking, and resource planning.
Research, deploy, and optimize resource management and scheduling systems (e.g., batch systems).
Evaluate and manage a helpdesk ticketing system; ensure timely resolution of user‑submitted issues.
Integrate HPC systems with laboratory equipment such as DNA sequencers, mass spectrometers, and cryo‑electron microscopes.
Implement and manage HPC security infrastructure; ensure compliance with PHI handling policies and best practices.
Create and maintain technical documentation and user guides; develop and deliver training sessions and workshops on HPC usage and best practices.
Consult with researchers to assess computational needs and prepare resource planning reports.
Support grant proposal development with technical specifications for computational infrastructure.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Bioinformatics, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
3+ years of experience administering Linux systems, HPC clusters, and large‑scale storage solutions.
Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or Perl for system administration and automation.
Experience with job scheduling systems (e.g., Slurm, PBS, LSF) and resource management tools.
Strong troubleshooting skills across system, hardware, network, and application layers.
Familiarity with scientific software installation, configuration, and maintenance.
Knowledge of security best practices, including handling of Protected Health Information (PHI) in research environments.
Excellent communication and documentation skills; ability to support and train non‑expert users.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting research computing in biomedical or clinical environments.
Familiarity with data transfer optimization tools (e.g., Globus, Aspera) and parallel file systems (e.g., GPFS, Lustre, BeeGFS).
Experience integrating HPC resources with laboratory instruments (e.g., DNA sequencers, mass spectrometers, microscopes).
Experience developing and delivering technical training, tutorials, or workshops.
Knowledge of grant writing processes and preparing computational resource justifications.
Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Singularity, Docker) in HPC environments.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Salary Salary range: $84,577.93 - $145,897.01 annually (actual salaries depend on experience, specialty, education, and hospital need). The range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
