Position Summary The Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina is seeking applications for a full-time surgical oncologist to join our Division of Surgical Oncology. This position is being recruited as an open-rank, open-track appointment at an FTE between 0.5 FTE and 1.0 FTE. The faculty member will be expected to perform both clinical and research duties, along with the academic responsibilities of an educational institution.
While this is an open rank position, we seek applicants with significant experience in open and minimally‑invasive surgery for cancers of the liver, biliary tree and pancreas.
The Division of Surgical Oncology is among the nine clinical divisions in the Department of Surgery. The Division currently includes 16 faculty members and 10 Advanced Practice Providers that provide a broad array of clinical services to deliver the highest quality multidisciplinary care for our oncology patients.
The Division is also actively involved in leading and contributing to our vast portfolio of clinical/translation research and educational missions through collaboration with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Faculty members within the Division of Surgical Oncology possess a desire to commit to all three missions of the Department and School of Medicine – clinical, education, and research. Clinical responsibilities will include participation in multidisciplinary care, tumor boards, and surgical support of oncology programs. Faculty members are committed to delivering high-quality clinical care that benefits the patients of the UNC Healthcare system.
Faculty members are expected to regularly participate in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows. Regarding the research mission, a commitment to any one of a broad array of research interests is critical, including but not limited to oncology clinical trials, outcomes, health services, basic science, translational, ethics, education, or global surgery research.
Overall, the selected candidate will be professional, team‑oriented, and able to interact well with colleagues inside and outside the Division.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements MD or equivalent. Fellowship trained in surgical oncology or hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Preference for applicants with previous experience in caring for patients with HPB malignancies. Proficiency in robotics and minimally‑invasive surgery is also preferred.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. The role requires reporting Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and completing annual training on reporting responsibilities.
