This position is not fully remote and will require up to 3 days a week in the office. This position provides a life/work balance with typically a 40-hour work week, and travel limited to training (e.g., conferences/courses). This position requires you to maintain internet service and a mobile phone with voice and data plans to be used when required for work. Purpose
This position expands the University's Wi-Fi team to better support a wireless-first campus and the ongoing delivery of enterprise wireless services across academic, research, residential, and administrative environments. The Enterprise Network Engineer II will plan, design, implement, maintain, and optimize campus wireless infrastructure; support RF coverage and capacity improvements; troubleshoot and remediate wireless issues; contribute to monitoring, lifecycle management, and operational standardization; and partner with ET and campus stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable, and high-performing wireless connectivity for end users across the University. Responsibilities
Under limited supervision, plan, design, implement, and maintain the university's enterprise network and telecommunications systems to meet performance objectives and service level agreements: Design and support campus wireless networks, including access points, controllers, SSIDs, and RF settings. Troubleshoot wireless issues such as interference, roaming, authentication, and client performance. Establish and maintain effective relationships with ET and unit representatives to understand end-user network and telecommunications needs across classrooms, research labs, and university auxiliary venues: Work with ET and campus units to understand wireless and network needs in classrooms, labs, housing, and event spaces. Coordinate surveys, maintenance, and deployments to improve service with minimal disruption. Assist with the evaluation of new network technologies, proof-of-concept initiatives, process standardization, and configuration automation: Test new network and wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi platforms and management tools. Help standardize configurations and automate routine network tasks. Raise visibility of issues and collaborate with the extended team on automation processes, fault detection, standardized operations, and lifecycle management: Use monitoring and reporting tools to identify network and wireless issues. Support upgrades, recurring issue tracking, and lifecycle planning for network infrastructure. Provide escalation support for network design, troubleshooting, and after-hours on-call activities: Provide escalation support for network and wireless outages, design issues, and complex troubleshooting. Assist with after-hours support, maintenance work, and incident response as needed. Driving university-owned vehicles to job sites is required for this position. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy UTS157. Perform other related functions as assigned. Required Qualifications
U.S. Citizen, resident, or officially recognized asylee - Applicant selected will be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position. Bachelor's Degree and intermediate network certifications (CCNA/CCNP - Routing/Switching or Data Center), or equivalent work experience. Comprehensive understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, routing, and LAN switching). 3 years of experience with medium-to-large enterprise network operations. Experience with Cisco Systems switches, routers and firewalls (IOS, IOS-XE, NX-OS, ASA, NGFW). Understanding of Ethernet cabling standards and color codes. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications
5+ years of experience with medium-to-large enterprise network operations. Large scale network operations experience. Experience working in data center or mission critical environments deploying, operating and troubleshooting networks, servers and application layer firewalls. Experience designing enterprise networks. Security design and operations experience including HIPAA/FERPA/PCI compliance and necessary application/protocol analysis. Experience with MPLS VRF/L2VPN implementations. Experience with network automation such as Ansible, AWX, and Zero-touch Provisioning (ZTP). Experience with Network Access Control (NAC) or Identity Based Network Services (IBNS). Familiarity with Software Defined Networking concepts. Higher education work experience. Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. The driving record will be evaluated to determine eligibility to drive a university owned vehicle. Salary Range
$95,000 + depending on qualifications Working Conditions
May work around standard office conditions. Electronic workshop environment. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Communication in person and over the phone, including being part of a team-wide phone service desk. Use of manual dexterity used for equipment repairs, installations and removals. Lifting and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted. Routine climbing of stairs/ladders. Work in confined spaces such as crawl spaces, basements, attic/ceilings, cable chases and equipment rooms. Work in extreme temperatures, loud noises, around chemicals, around airborne particulates and around electrical and mechanical hazards. Occasional driving of a university vehicle. Work Shift
