On-Site During the Learning Celebration (Sept. 19–Oct. 9)
Work with the Learning Celebration Coordinator to facilitate all on-site activities including the school program, volunteer camping experience, and volunteer safety/logistics meetings Maintain safety and health procedures at all times during the program Identify and address site, equipment, volunteer, and student safety concerns proactively Coordinate logistics for volunteer canoe trips Manage site moves between Chatham, Alamance, and Rockingham county locations Participate in camp life and activities with Learning Celebration volunteers
Post-Program Wrap-Up (Oct. 11–17)
Lead or assist with breakdown of all equipment and storage Complete equipment condition inventory and flag needed repairs for next year Submit final expense receipts and a written program debrief to the Learning Celebration Coordinator
Qualifications
1–2 years of experience working in outdoor education, environmental education, recreation, camping, or other outdoor program settings. Experience working with children and youth in educational, recreational, or outdoor settings. Experience planning logistics for outdoor programs, events, field trips, camping experiences, or multi-site operations. Knowledge of outdoor risk management, safety protocols, and emergency response procedures. Current CPR and First Aid certification (required before the start date). Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, carrying, and transporting equipment. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to independently problem-solve, make sound decisions, and adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced outdoor environment. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of volunteers, students, educators, and community partners. Strong leadership skills, professional integrity, and commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Salary/Benefits Note on 1099 Compensation: As an independent contractor, this position does not include employer-paid taxes or benefits. The contract rate is set to account for self-employment tax obligations (~15.3% SE tax). The total contract value is $7,168, equivalent to approximately. $256 per day for 28 days. This reflects a fair market rate for an outdoor education program coordinator role in NC when accounting for 1099 status. Additional preparation work prior to September 15 is paid at $28/hour plus mileage reimbursement at the current IRS rate ($0.725/mile) for site visits.
