Job Summary: Provide essential clinical support in the operating room by assisting anesthesia providers, surgeons, and team members with procedural tasks. Ensure adherence to established standards for instrument processing and sterilization, maintaining a safe and efficient surgical environment. Essential Responsibilities
Assist with procedural tasks and monitor instruments and equipment for proper cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization following industry standards such as AMMI, AORN, and AST. Adapt to changing department activity levels and prioritize tasks accordingly. Use supplies judiciously while supporting individualized patient care. Collaborate with registered nurses to obtain non-routine supplies without compromising quality or patient care time. Respond promptly to changes in delegated care aspects and assist in planning patient care adjustments as requested by anesthesia and surgical teams. Consult and update preference cards, instrument sets, and supply pull sheets to reflect technological advances. Promote teamwork by accepting and delegating tasks appropriately. Patient Satisfaction
Work closely with healthcare providers to coordinate intraoperative care, including instrument and supply setup. Maintain professionalism and minimize noise in the operating room environment. Exemplify excellent guest relations with patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers. Collaborate to enhance patient flow amid schedule changes. Patient Safety
Perform cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization of all surgical instruments and equipment. Prepare for surgical interventions based on individual patient needs and respond to unexpected changes. Adhere to HIPAA regulations and social media policies. Verify medications and supplies passed to the sterile field using a double-check system. Maintain a culture of safety by reporting any breaches in sterile technique or patient care activities. Professional Development
Maintain current knowledge of anatomy, instruments, and equipment. Share expertise through orientation, cross-training, and mentoring peers and new staff. Identify learning needs and collaborate with management to pursue professional growth opportunities. Participate in departmental goal setting and attend in-services on product and practice changes. Build strong relationships with physicians, anesthesia providers, and other healthcare team members. Maintain a professional and calm patient environment. Practice AIDET communication techniques (Acknowledge, Identify, Duration, Explanation, Thank You). Foster a team-oriented atmosphere by being approachable and flexible with assignments and staffing needs. Education and Certification
Current certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the appropriate state board.
Work Schedule Full-time, first shift, approximately 40 hours per week with call requirements. This position is located in a regional healthcare facility serving the Midwest United States.
