Teach courses in the Career Pathways in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training Program. Be available for pre-season and in-season practices and interscholastic games. Develop, coordinate and administer a comprehensive sports medical program for assigned high school athletics program and administrative services necessary for the implementation and expansion of such program. Develop, coordinate and administer a comprehensive sports medical program for participants of high school sports, supervise the treatment or referral of injuries to medical personnel or interface directly with medical personnel in the treatment of student athletes. Develop and maintain a program of preventive physical care for assigned high school teams; determine and ensure the acquisition of safety equipment and supplies applicable to the respective high school sports. Maintain liaison between the high school and local medical facilities in arranging for physical examinations and in coordinating and conducting post injury rehabilitation for athletes; supervise the compilation and maintenance of statistical records of team injuries and medical data for the athletic department. Assist and advise athletic coaches in planning and instructing physical training programs for athletes, interface with physical fitness classes and planning of special training menus for student athletes. Plan and schedule purchasing of all sports medical program supplies and equipment within allocated budget parameters. Assist the Athletic Director and Business Office in preparation of Athletic Training budget. Instruct, supervise and review the performance of student training staff. Study, evaluate and recommend new techniques and equipment in physical training and physical therapy. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Career Pathways in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training Unit: High School Health Science or Physical Education Course Title: Athletic Training/Injuries I Area: Anatomy/Physiology Topic: Basic Human Anatomy Course Description: Students enrolled in Athletic Injuries I will study basic Anatomy, Human Physiology, injury prevention, injury recognition, injury care, and emergency care. Basic taping techniques and an introduction to rehabilitation procedures will be taught. Nutritional and conditioning considerations will also be taught as they relate to athletic performance. Course Goals: To develop an understanding of the field of Athletic Training and Athletic Therapy. The course will also introduce the basic foundations of the fields of athletic medicine. Learning Objectives and Goals:
Become familiar with the student athletic training program Have a working knowledge of basic medical terminology. Demonstrate a basic understanding of skeletal and muscular anatomy and physiology. Demonstrate basic understanding of wound care for abrasions, lacerations, puncture, and blisters. Demonstrate basic injury evaluation skills. Demonstrate a working knowledge of first aid/CPR, emergency care protocols, injury management, body stabilization and emergency transport. Have a basic understanding of nutrition as it relates to the athletics and the athletic individual. Understand basic strength and conditioning principles. Demonstrate fundamental working knowledge of athletic taping.
