Job Description Summary Customer Solutions Engineer – a highly skilled Mainframe Modernization Senior Consultant who provides technical support and leadership in the creation and delivery of technology solutions designed to support our customers’ Digital Transformation. Responsibilities
Provide services to customers (75%) Work on complex project scope with minimal direction from the customer or SI nominated representatives to accomplish assigned tasks. Contribute to design for specific deliverables and assist in the deployment of Rocket products. Implement new solutions under the direction of Delivery Architects. Create proof of concept/value technology analysis and pilots. Conduct external and internal technical presentations/trainings to peer groups. Use and contribute to technical forums within the Rocket AMC environment and local professional communities and technical user groups. Apply subject‑matter knowledge to solve a variety of common technical issues. Exercise independent judgment within defined practices and procedures to determine appropriate action. Participate as part of a team and maintain good relationships with team members and customers. Ultimately accountable for technical solution implementation for the project. Lead a team and communicate project status and risks to all stakeholders on behalf of the team. Use technical experience to give customers sound technical advice. Know the architecture, versions, and requirements. Determine appropriate technical resource requirements for project completion and work with PM to request resources. Coordinate with PM on technical communication to customer, any new requirements or changes in scope, and impacts on delivering the technical solution. Determine if a change is a product defect or enhancement before communicating to customer. Estimate new requirements of project and obtain architect or manager approval. Conduct or assign code reviews.
Qualifications
5‑7 years of relevant technical experience. Excellent communication and customer‑service skills; confident telephone manner. Proactive and able to work under pressure. Experience in complex IT project implementations, customizations, and/or maintenance. Analytical mindset to analyze test results and facilitate defect resolution. Organized and methodical, able to manage numerous tasks. Fluent in written and verbal English.
Requested Technical Skills
IBM Enterprise COBOL or PLI programming experience. System‑level experience of IBM CICS; IMS and JCL. Relational databases such as IBM DB2/UDB, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL. Windows and Linux/UNIX operating systems. Knowledge of major cloud infrastructures and technologies—AWS, Azure, GCP, Cloud Foundry, Docker/Kubernetes.
Desired Project Experience
Practical experience with mainframe application modernization projects, including migration via hardware/middleware emulation, automated code conversion, and re‑platforming. Experience with COBOL modernization and porting code across platforms. Familiarity with agile engineering practices such as test automation, TDD, CI/CD, DevOps, and test data management. Experience developing, deploying, and tuning data modernization solutions for mainframe such as IMS/DB, IDMS, ADABAS, and VSAM data migration. Experience implementing and operating DevOps and agile tools/platforms across stages of the development lifecycle. Experience configuring automation pipelines in GitHub, Azure DevOps, AWS CodePipeline, Jenkins or similar tools.
Other Preferred Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field. Experience with Rocket COBOL‑based products – Enterprise Developer, Visual COBOL, Enterprise Server, Server Express, Net Express. Knowledge of additional mainframe languages or environments such as REXX, Assembler, Natural, Adabas. Relevant business and IT architecture certifications (e.g., AWS Solution Architect Professional, Microsoft Azure Solution Architect, Google Cloud Certification, SAFe). Proficiency in another EU language.
