As a Software Engineering Manager, you’ll write code and lead a team—working directly with Chalk’s founders to build a platform for real-time ML inference at scale. You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping both the technical architecture and the engineering culture at a fast‑growing, early‑stage company. You’ll collaborate with an exceptional group of engineers, including Advent of Code winners, former Jane Street quants, Rust compiler contributors, and others pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in ML infrastructure. Location: New York or San Francisco (Onsite) Salary: up to $400K Work authorization: This role requires you to be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. What We’re Looking For
5+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years in technical leadership Prior experience at an early‑stage startup Experience building production ML systems or data infrastructure Strong programming skills and deep systems thinking Ability to lead teams while remaining hands‑on Clear communicator who bridges technical and business contexts Proven ability to deliver complex projects on time Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
