Employment Type: Full timeShift: Day Shift Description: Pharmacy Tech Specialist - Team Lead Department: In-patient Pharmacy Location: Trinity Health Ann Arbor About the Department The inpatient pharmacy at Trinity Health Ann Arbor is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, servicing inpatients, the emergency department, operating rooms and multiple procedural areas. Clean room operations are accredited by Joint Commission for adherence to the highest standards of USP 797 and 800. Trinity Health Ann Arbor is also the lead location for the national Trinity Health Pharmacy Education and Advancement of Technicians (THE-PEAT) training program to educate pharmacy students to become PTCB, licensed Pharmacy Technicians. Position Purpose Performs pharmacy supportive functions requiring an advanced level of training and additional levels of responsibility; may focus on team leadership or advanced technical skills. Performs tasks requiring independent judgement, advanced technical skills, and creative problem solving. Demonstrates performance that consistently meets quality assurance standards. The consequences of a compounding or drug selection error, if undetected, could result in serious patient injury. Status available: Full-time Education: Minimum of six months specialized training beyond high school. Experience: Minimum of 1 year of pharm tech experience (or) demonstrated competence in abilities of all Pharmacy Technician II job functions, including IV room competency.
Licensure: Licensure as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan is required. REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations accurately. Basic typing and word processing skills. Basic computer skills to do order entry, generate reports, retrieve data and diagnose minor printer problems. Ability to stand for long periods of time (at least four and up to eight hours per day) or to walk long distances without difficulty. Interpersonal skills to effectively train technicians and interact with physicians, nurses, and other Health Center personnel to resolve routine distribution issues. Written communication skills necessary to develop and implement departmental distribution procedures. Creative problem-solving skills.
Good level of judgment and ability to work independently. Analytical skills to effectively resolve controlled substance discrepancies and routine distribution problems. Maintenance of quality assurance standards that ensures a high level of work accuracy. Typical responsibilities:
Performs all job functions of a Pharmacy Technician II on an as needed basis Functionally supervises the daily activities of approximately 30 technicians on an as needed basis. Monitors daily work schedule, assigns duties to technicians and revises assignments as needed to adjust to changing work volumes. Consults with the Technician Coordinator when necessary. Proven competency is required before providing services related to compounding. Documents the performance of pharmacy technicians on an ongoing basis and provides input for the preparation of technician performance evaluations. Helps any member of the pharmacy team when needed, including technicians, purchasing staff and pharmacists. Provides initial aseptic technique intravenous teaching for new technicians, students, and interns, including video, practical training, lectures, calculations and readings. Maintains an ongoing testing protocol for intravenous technique by documenting the successful completion of IV testing kit by all technicians on a regular basis. Prepares cytotoxic agents and NICU pharmaceutical products following established departmental, licensing and regulating agency guidelines. Determines, assesses, and adjusts technician procedure for efficiently and accurately stocking automated medstations. Participates in weekly team leader meetings.
Completes additional tasks assigned by the Technician Coordinator and/or Technician Supervisor. Problem solves with Health System personnel to resolve medication distribution issues.
