The Position The City of Sunnyvale is looking for an Intern to perform GIS work, up to 40 hours per week from 5/25/26 to 8/31/26. The positions are an excellent temporary opportunity for an individual with GIS skills wishing to obtain relevant work experience. Current student enrollment is not required. The selected candidate will work under supervision on weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Enrichment Opportunities
Learn and work with the City’s ArcGIS and Office 365 suite of applications.
Learn concepts of data analysis, data management, and AGOL/Portal Application development.
You will be assigned a mentor.
You will have opportunities to shadow other City positions.
Duties
Edit/maintain GIS layers in ArcGIS.
Build Web Maps/Applications/Dashboards.
Develop and publish project specific hosted features.
Work with City departments to expand public facing applications.
Working Conditions Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven, and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard and certain tools. The position also requires near and far vision when reading written work related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal customer service. The need to lift, drag, carry, and push equipment, tools and supplies up to 50 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.
Minimum Qualifications High school graduation or GED equivalent and completion of at least one course in Computer Information Systems, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or a related field.
Skills and Experience
Positive work attitude, reliable and responsible.
Ability to write and communicate concisely and effectively.
Proficient computer skills with basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and ArcGIS.
Good organizational skills, detail-oriented and good data keeper.
Licenses/Certificates Possession at time of hiring and continued maintenance of a valid California driver's license and a safe driving record, or the ability to provide alternate transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.
