Empower Schools of Alabama The School Nurse plays a critical role in supporting the health, wellness, and academic success of students. The School Nurse serves as a health advocate for students, staff, and families by providing direct nursing care, managing student health needs, promoting health education, and ensuring compliance with state and district health requirements. The School Nurse works collaboratively with school administrators, teachers, parents, healthcare providers, and community agencies to create a safe and healthy learning environment. Key Responsibilities
Serve as the health advocate for students, staff, and families. Assess student health needs and provide appropriate nursing care, treatment, referrals, and follow-up. Develop, implement, and monitor individualized health care plans for students with chronic or specialized medical needs. Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, district policies, and state regulations. Maintain accurate and confidential health records and document all nursing and medical services in the student information system. Monitor student immunization compliance and communicate with families regarding requirements and follow-up. Conduct and coordinate health screenings, including vision, hearing, height, weight, asthma, scoliosis, and other required screenings. Respond to medical emergencies and provide first aid and emergency care as needed. Collaborate with school personnel to support students with health concerns and medical accommodations. Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and other student support meetings as appropriate. Train and educate staff regarding student health conditions, medication administration procedures, medical devices, and emergency response protocols. Promote health education and disease prevention initiatives within the school community. Maintain current CPR certification. Attend required professional development, faculty meetings, district meetings, and training sessions. Comply with the Alabama Nurse Practice Act, Alabama State Department of Education requirements, district policies, and professional nursing standards. Serve as a resource for health-related concerns within the school community. Perform other duties as assigned by school administration.
Qualifications Required Qualifications
Must meet background clearance requirements specified by Alabama Statutes and State Board of Education regulations. Graduate of an accredited nursing program with a degree in Nursing. Registered Nurse (RN) licensed to practice in the State of Alabama. Current CPR certification. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a school setting or with school-aged children. Experience managing student health records and health care plans. CPR Trainer Certification. Knowledge of school health regulations and student health services.
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods. Ability to respond quickly to student health emergencies. Manual dexterity to operate office and medical equipment. Ability to lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to perform the physical requirements necessary to provide nursing care and emergency response services.
