Job Title: Exceptional Student Education- Licensed Physical Therapist Location: Various Locations Salary: $55,000 - $94,000* Reports to: Principal/Designee Bargaining Unit: DFT Benefits Eligibility: Yes Telecommuting Eligibility: School-based. Not eligible for telecommuting
*DPSCD will offer a $15,000 retention/recruitment certification bonus to existing and new educators who hold an active State of Michigan License for Physical Therapy for the 2026-2027 school year.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidate must possess Bachelor or Master of Physical Therapy from an accredited college or university. The State of Michigan requires a license for this occupation.
All states require that physical therapists be licensed. To obtain a license, applicants must graduate from an accredited educational program and pass a national certification examination. Those who pass the exam become a licensed physical therapist or licensed/certified physical therapist.
Essential Functions: Conduct appropriate evaluation of students referred for related services under IDEA and prepare written reports of the evaluations and findings Participate in meetings as member of the Multidisciplinary Team Participate in the development of IEP or 504 plans for eligible students Provide direct and indirect physical therapy in educational settings/least restrictive environments to students Collaborate with other school personnel regarding physical therapy and the students' needs Delegate activities to teachers, parents and paraprofessionals
Train/instruct teachers, parents and paraprofessionals in delegated techniques and equipment use Travel to and among schools to provide services Maintain records of services provided Lift, transfer and position students and equipment as necessary Provides services to students eligible for related services
Improves, develops, restores or maintains a child's sensory motor function in educational environments Functions as "related service personnel" under state and federal law and regulations Perform other job-related responsibilities as assigned by the Principal (or Designee).
Security Clearance:
Internal Applicants
If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
External Applicants
In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
