School Nurse Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education, the District School Nurse develops and maintains a broad program of health education and services designed to protect, maintain, and enhance the health of students. The school nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by identifying and remediating health related barriers that may impede the ability of students to learn. Plans, assesses and evaluates the health and development status of students (including mandated screenings) to identify specific medical disorders and health issues affecting the learning process; interprets the health and developmental assessment to health technicians, parents, teachers, administrators, and other professionals directly concerned with the pupil; designs and implements a health maintenance plan to meet the individual health needs of the pupil; refers pupil to appropriate community resources for necessary services; interprets medical and nursing findings and makes recommendations to professional personnel involved; maintains communication with parents and all involved agencies to encourage necessary treatment; identifies, implements, and evaluates health and nursing services goals and objectives for the student's Individualized Education Program (I.E.P.) and determines whether services may be provided through IHSP/504/ADA procedure; conducts immunization programs pursuant to Ed. Code §49403 to assure state mandates are met; reviews and provides immunizations and TB testing to students in danger of exclusion; coordinates and conducts TB skin testing to staff and volunteers as requested; determines and sets policies for communicable disease control in accordance with District and California Department of Public Health policy; consults with, conducts in-service training to, and serves as a resource person to teachers and administrators, and acts as participant in implementing sections of a comprehensive health curriculum for students by providing current scientific information regarding nutrition, preventive dentistry, mental health, genetics, prevention of communicable disease, self-health care, consumer education and growth and development; provides direction and training for health technicians, teachers, administrators, and other school staff in first aid guidelines and other areas of health; sets first aid policy for the schools in accordance with District policy; counsels pupils and parents in the following areas: by assisting in identifying and utilizing appropriate private and community health delivery services for professional care and remediation of defects; working with parents, pupils, and staff regarding health related attendance problems; helping parents, school personnel, and pupils understand and adjust to physical, mental, and social limitations; exploring with families and pupils the attitudes, information, and values which affect their health behavior; provides professional supervision of health technicians to assure compliance in all aspects of the health services program in accordance with state law and District policies and procedures; provides in-service and training for new nursing staff and classified staff who function in health services; teaches, supervises, mentors, and evaluates non-licensed support personnel providing Special Physical Health Care Services (SPHCS) procedures to identified students; assists in identification of safety and health hazards on school sites; assists parents and pupils in solving financial, transportation, and other barriers to needed health services; participates in professional and community in-service and meetings related to health issues; performs other duties as assigned, including special assignment during crises or emergency situations as determined by the superintendent. Work year may be a traditional ten-month assignment or one of the tracks in the year-round school program. Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of/or ability to obtain a California School Nurse Services credential. (Preliminary credential may be obtained if candidate possesses R.N. and Bachelor's Degree.) Pediatric Nurse Practitioner certificate (preferred). Public Health Nurse certificate (preferred). Current driver's license and reliable vehicle. Current professional level CPR. California Audiometric certificate needs to be completed shortly after hire. Successful nursing experience is normally required before assignment to this class. Knowledge of Specialized Physical Health Care procedures, especially those commonly associated with students with severe disabilities (preferred). Bilingual/Spanish ability desirable.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions of the position. Physical Demands; Sit, stand, reach, look down, turn neck (frequently); walk, bend, stoop, squat, push, pull, climb stairs, reach above shoulders (occasionally); kneel, crawl, Client down, use foot controls (infrequently); lift/carry items to 10 pounds (frequently), to 25 pounds (occasionally) and 26 — 90 pounds (students, in emergencies); grasp/manipulate materials and supplies (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking (continuously). Working Conditions: Indoor classrooms, outdoor school yard and grounds. Exposure to: student and playground noise, communicable diseases, unruly students, air conditioning, seasonal temperatures, dust, wind, pesticides and possible smog. Credentialed School Nurse Certificate is required. RN license is required.
