Job Summary

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) in the Operating Room provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of registered nurses and surgical staff. The PCA assists with patient preparation, transportation, room turnover, stocking supplies, maintaining a clean and safe surgical environment, and supporting efficient OR operations.

Essential Job Duties
  • Assist with transporting patients to and from the operating room and recovery areas
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including positioning and basic pre-operative care
  • Assist nursing and surgical staff during patient transfers and positioning
  • Clean and prepare operating rooms between procedures according to infection control standards
  • Stock and organize surgical supplies, equipment, and linens
  • Assist with specimen transport and handling per facility protocol
  • Monitor and maintain cleanliness of surgical equipment and work areas
  • Support patient comfort, safety, and privacy at all times
  • Respond promptly to staff requests and patient care needs
  • Assist with lifting, turning, and moving patients using proper body mechanics
  • Follow all hospital safety, infection prevention, and HIPAA guidelines
  • Document patient care activities as required
  • Participate in emergency situations and rapid response procedures as directed
Qualifications Required
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Previous healthcare or patient care experience preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced surgical environment
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
Preferred
  • Prior Operating Room or surgical services experience
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and infection control practices
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to assist with patient transfers and positioning
  • Manual dexterity and ability to handle medical equipment safely
