Salary: $20–$32 per hour(DOE)
Work Year: 185–190 days (aligned with school calendar)

Position Overview

The Sign Language Interpreter provides high-quality interpretation services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing across K–12 classrooms. The interpreter ensures students have full access to academic instruction, school activities, and communication with peers and staff. This role supports both general and special education settings and collaborates closely with teachers, parents, and related service providers to promote an inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide real-time ASL interpretation for students in classrooms, meetings, and school events.
• Support students in general education and special education settings, including sub-separate or self-contained classrooms.
• Participate in IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and school team meetings.
• Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other service providers to ensure students' communication needs are met.
• Assist in implementing individualized accommodations and modifications for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with professional and ethical standards.
• Attend professional development opportunities to remain current in educational interpreting practices.

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpretation or a related field like Communication, Master's degree preferred.
• Certification in Sign Language Interpreting (NIC – National Interpreter Certification preferred).
• Demonstrated experience in ASL interpretation, preferably in an educational setting.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work effectively with students, parents, and school staff.

Preferred:

• Experience working with K–12 students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• Knowledge of IEP processes, special education laws, and classroom accommodations.
• Familiarity with assistive technology for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
