The purpose and function of the Hygienist is to act as the liaison between the dentist and the patient. The Hygienist is responsible for using a variety of interpersonal and clinical skills to meet the oral health needs of the practice’s patients. As with all positions at Fennimore Dental LLC, prompt arrival at work, regular attendance, positive attitude, and adherence to practice policies is expected.
* Document chief complaint of patient
* Review medical and dental history with patient
* Perform periodontal risk, oral cancer, smile and sleep apnea assessments
* Perform the cleaning and polishing of patient’s teeth
* Perform periodontal debridement on patient
* Complete dental charting to include abfractures
* Complete periodontal charting to assess for periodontal disease
* Take radiographs as instructed by dentist
* Review areas of concern with the document camera prior to the dentist examining patient
* Apply sealant, fluoride and desensitizing treatments on patients
* Assist dentist in developing treatment plan for patient
* Educate patient on homecare protocols and demonstrate flossing
* Work chair-side with dentist during examinations and treatments
* Cross train to fulfill essential functions of dental assistant and administrative assistant
* Clean, disinfect and sterilize materials and treatment rooms according to office and OSHA guidelines
Assist with the effective and efficient functioning of the dental practice to fulfill the practice’s mission statement. This will include, but not be limited to, assist in scheduling patients for treatments; maintain patient recall system; maintain pediatric “patient of the month”; assist with community dental screening programs; assist with marketing activities to promote the growth of the practice; assist with the maintenance / cleaning of the office; and perform other tasks as requested.
Ability to perform routine dental procedures and diagnostic tests is mandatory. Must be proficient with dental terminology and have the ability to quickly adapt to practice software programs and dental equipment. Ability to communicate effectively in English with the dentist and patients is mandatory.
Individual must have a degree or certificate from an accredited dental hygiene school and hold a valid Wisconsin state license to practice. In addition, the individual must meet current requirements under the laws of the Commonwealth of Wisconsin including up-to-date OSHA , HIPAA and CPR training.
Individual must be a positive team player. Individual must be able to take instruction from dentist as well as work independently to provide preventive care for all patients. Individual must display a professional manner and exhibit diplomacy and confidentiality when working with patients. Individual must possess good communication skills and have the ability to speak comfortably with patients, colleagues and management staff, even in difficult situations.
Excellent fine motor skills are necessary for inserting fingers and dental instruments into the mouth of a patient. Must be able to hold and maneuver equipment. Must have the ability to reach upwards and outward with arms and hands and have full use and dexterity of wrists, hands and fingers. Must be able to stand, sit and lean for extended periods of time and be able to walk to and from exam rooms. Must be able to lift small parcels of supplies of no more than 50 pounds. Must maintain focus and concentrate on patient’s well being and doctor’s instructions.
