Developer Operations (DevOps) Engineers act as a link between software development and IT operations, improving the relationship and communication between them.
In general, the goal of DevOps Engineers is to optimise organisational processes. They help with automation building, coding, and scripting.
They generally work in these three different fields: software development, testing, and program operations. Build / Release Engineer jobs, DevOps jobs and Site Reliability Engineer jobs are just some examples of the roles that belong to this category.
It goes without saying that these kinds of positions require a good understanding of DevOps practices and how to implement them.
Several of these were adopted from Agile, which helps reduce communications gaps between developers and their customers.
DevOps practices promote interactions between the IT team and the development team in order to release products faster and more reliably. Some key principles include automation, continuous integration, and continuous delivery.
Len Bass, a computer scientist proposed DevOps as “a set of practices intended to reduce the time between committing a change to a system and the change being placed into normal production, while ensuring high quality”.
DevOps Engineers generally have experience in data management, software development, operating systems, and computer programming. In order to analyse data and improve workflow, it is necessary to possess critical thinking skills and some knowledge of business analysis techniques. It is also beneficial to be able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented, and goal-driven environment.
