Job Summary: Provide essential support in surgical procedures by assisting anesthesia providers, surgeons, and operating room staff in a clinical setting. Responsibilities include monitoring and processing surgical instruments and equipment according to established standards such as AMMI, AORN, and AST. Perform cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization tasks to maintain a sterile environment. Adapt to changing priorities and workflow demands while ensuring judicious use of supplies.
Quality: Collaborate with registered nurses to obtain specialized supplies promptly, ensuring uninterrupted patient care. Respond effectively to unexpected changes during procedures and assist in planning patient care adjustments as requested by surgical team members. Participate in updating preference cards and instrument sets to reflect technological advancements. Promote teamwork by accepting and delegating tasks appropriately.
Patient Satisfaction: Work closely with healthcare providers to prepare instrument and supply setups before surgeries. Maintain a professional, quiet environment and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills with patients, visitors, physicians, and colleagues. Support efficient patient flow by adapting to daily schedule changes.
Patient Safety: Ensure thorough cleaning and sterilization of all surgical instruments and equipment. Prepare for surgical interventions tailored to individual patient needs and respond to ongoing changes during procedures. Adhere strictly to HIPAA regulations and social media policies. Verify medications and supplies passed to the sterile field through a double-check system. Report any breaches in sterile technique promptly.
Professional Development: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of anatomy and surgical instruments. Share expertise with peers, assist in orientation and cross-training, and provide leadership when needed. Identify learning needs and collaborate with management to pursue professional growth opportunities. Participate in departmental goal setting and attend relevant in-service training sessions.
Customer Service: Build strong relationships with physicians, anesthesia providers, and other healthcare team members. Foster a professional and calm patient environment by practicing AIDET (Acknowledge, Identify, Duration, Explanation, Thank You). Embrace teamwork, remain approachable, and maintain positive interdepartmental relationships. Demonstrate flexibility with assignments and staffing needs.
Education and Certification: Must hold current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or be a licensed practical nurse (LPN) with registration and nursing education credentials.
Work Schedule: Full-time, first shift, 40 hours per week with call requirements. Position is located in a regional healthcare facility serving the Midwest area of the United States.
