About the role [100% remote, may require onsite interviews]. Join us in shaping the future of Automotive Commerce. Our Dealer Insights team is transforming to deliver value to our customers. As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will help revitalize our customer-facing products across Cars.com with a comprehensive technical strategy to simplify and amplify user experiences and the capabilities they enable.
Responsibilities
Guide an autonomous team that delivers value to dealer customers; work with Product leadership to turn quarterly and yearly business goals into an incremental, measurable roadmap.
Champion sound engineering practices around observability, security, modular architecture, and on-call health; serve as incident commander and steward of production reliability for your domain.
Influence backend platform architecture and frontend component strategy; shape cross-domain integrations to unlock new revenue streams; help set the technical direction for the wider organization.
Lead cross-functional collaboration, coordinate integrations with adjacent domains, negotiate timelines and API contracts, and represent Core Services in company-wide program reviews.
Partner with Talent Acquisition to build a diverse pipeline, run structured interviews, and make evidence-based hiring decisions; forecast head-count needs as product scope grows.

You likely have a track record shipping high-scale solutions, mentoring engineers and managers, and negotiating scope changes while preserving customer value. Why you’ll be excited about this role This opportunity enables you to lead and shape the full-stack delivery and product roadmaps, while driving reliability, security, and architectural modernization across owned systems.
Qualifications & Experience
10+ years in software engineering with 5+ years leading engineers; proven experience shipping and operating business-critical backend services and frontend web applications at scale.
Strong background in cloud-native architectures (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes/EKS), event-driven and API-driven systems; familiarity with component libraries, modular front-end systems; ability to review designs for scalability, resilience, and cost.
Delivery mastery with capacity planning and using Jira, DORA, and DX metrics to drive predictable outcomes.
Leadership and people development: coaching senior/staff engineers, providing feedback, resolving conflicts, and fostering an inclusive, high-trust culture.
Product partnership: experience co-authoring OKRs, making scope/risk trade-offs, and communicating decisions to executives and stakeholders.
Security & reliability mindset: incident management, observability stacks (DataDog), vulnerability remediation, and DevSecOps pipelines.
Strong communication: ability to tailor technical and non-technical narratives to engineers, product managers, and executives; influence beyond direct authority.
Bonus: experience with Elixir/Phoenix and/or TypeScript/Deno/Next.JS.
Compensation & Benefits Salary Range: $154,200.00 - $192,750.00
