Occupational Therapist Assistant

Reports to: Special Education Director Pay Grade AE 1: Administrative Support

Dept./School: Special Education Department Initiated Date: October 12, 2021

District Primary Purpose: To assist and promote La Joya ISD District in implementing a rigorous curriculum/instructional program that supports student success and achievement.

Department Primary Purpose: The Special Education occupational therapist assistant's primary responsibility is to provide quality occupational therapy services to assigned individuals under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification: Associate degree of Applied Science with a major in Occupational Therapy Assistant Program or related field

Valid Texas license as an occupational therapist granted by the State Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners

Knowledge/Skills: Ability to implement occupational therapy treatment programs as specified by occupational therapy plan of care Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skill

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Responds to request for services in accordance with school district policies and procedures.
  2. Assists with data collection and evaluation under the supervision of an OT.
  3. Assist with instructing teachers, staff, and parents in use of adaptive equipment, assistive technology programs or devices, and integration of therapy goals into the educational program.
  4. Develops Individual Education Plan (IEP) under the supervision of an OT.
  5. Implements and coordinates intervention plan under the supervision of an OT.
  6. Provides for consultation services that follow a documented routine and accepted procedure under the supervision of an OT.
  7. Adapts intervention environment tools, materials, and activities according to the needs of the individual and his or her socio-cultural context under the supervision of an OT.
  8. Follows policies and procedures required in Special Education Department.
  9. Performs continuous quality improvement activities and/or program evaluation in collaboration with an OT.
  10. Maintains treatment area, equipment and supply inventory as required.
  11. Schedules and prioritizes workload under supervision of an OT.
  12. Compile, maintain, and file reports, records, and other documents required including accurate student records and patient progress notes.
  13. Selects, adapts, and implements intervention under the supervision of an OT.
  14. Modifies treatment approaches to reflect changing needs under the supervision of an OT.
  15. Formulates discontinuation and follow-up plans under the supervision of an OT.
  16. Educates others in the area of established service competency under the supervision of an OT.
  17. Contributes to program planning and development in collaboration with an OT.
  18. Maintain confidentiality.
  19. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands: Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures, and data; maintain emotional control under stress.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Occasional prolonged hours, regular physical demands of stooping, lifting, and other strenuous demands of job performance (e.g. picking up students, restraining students, etc.). This position may involve rare exposure to bacteria, bodily fluids and communicable diseases.
