Summary: MHEDA (Material Handling Equipment Distributors Association) is a trade association serving companies in the material handling industry (Industrial Truck, Storage & Handling, Systems Integrators). We help members improve business performance through education, benchmarking, resources, networking, and industry insights.
The Membership Recruitment Manager is responsible for driving membership growth by identifying, cultivating, and converting prospective companies into MHEDA members. This role serves as MHEDA’s primary business development and outreach professional, managing prospect pipelines, conducting targeted outreach, coordinating visits, and guiding prospects through the membership journey from awareness to engagement.
This position blends sales, relationship development, and marketing collaboration, leveraging data, CRM workflows, events, and personalized outreach to expand MHEDA’s member base across all business communities. The Membership Recruitment Manager plays a key role in ensuring long-term association growth and industry participation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Prospecting & Lead Generation
Identify and qualify prospective member companies and contacts aligned with MHEDA’s target business segments and growth priorities. Leverage research and data intelligence tools (e.g., ZoomInfo, industry directories, partner network lists, etc.) to source new prospects, enrich prospect records, and strengthen overall data integrity and segmentation. Conduct proactive outreach through calls, emails, LinkedIn, and referrals to initiate and advance relationships with prospective members. Develop and maintain a structured prospect pipeline using HubSpot and AMS (Association Management System), ensuring disciplined tracking of outreach, qualification status, and progression. Develop strategic prospecting campaigns in partnership with Marketing, including targeted flows and outreach sequences.
Relationship Development & Conversion
Serve as the primary point of contact for prospective members throughout the evaluation and decision process. Conduct discovery conversations to understand company goals, challenges, and alignment with MHEDA offerings. Present and articulate MHEDA’s value proposition tailored to company size, business model, and segment. Schedule and conduct virtual and in-person prospect visits, including facility tours when appropriate. Guide prospects through membership enrollment and onboarding in partnership with the Member Experience and Community Development teams. Track and follow up on inactive prospects and re-engage unconverted leads. Engagement & Participation Acquisition
Support event-driven recruitment by engaging non-member attendees at conferences, webinars, and trade shows. Convert non-member event participants, survey participants, and content consumers into membership prospects. Collaborate with internal teams to create pathways from participation (education, benchmarking, communities) to membership. Identify opportunities to introduce prospects to peer members, committees, and advisory groups.
Renewal & Re-Engagement Support
Support retention and win-back efforts in partnership with Member Experience by engaging at-risk, disengaged, and former members through targeted outreach and relationship rebuilding. Participate in retention conversations when appropriate, particularly for recently joined members. Data, Systems & Reporting
Maintain accurate prospect and activity records within MHEDA systems (HubSpot and AMS). Track and analyze pipeline progression and key performance metrics, including outreach activity, lead-to-member conversion rates, participation-to-membership conversions, and overall membership growth. Provide regular reports and insights to leadership on pipeline health and growth opportunities. Recommend improvements to workflows, messaging, and targeting strategies based on performance data. Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Marketing on campaigns, messaging, and lead nurturing workflows. Coordinate with Member Experience to ensure smooth handoff from prospect to active member relationship. Partner with Events and Programs teams to leverage conferences as recruitment channels. Contribute insights to improve MHEDA’s overall member acquisition strategy and value positioning. Minimum Education / Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, or related field preferred. 3+ years of experience in business development, sales, account management, membership recruiting or development, or related role. Experience working within an association, B2B industry, or relationship-based sales environment preferred. Strong comfort with CRM systems and outreach tracking (HubSpot, ZoomInfo or similar preferred). Proven ability to manage a pipeline and meet growth or conversion goals. Supervisory Responsibilities:
