The New Mexico Department of Transportation is the state agency responsible for providing a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public, while promoting economic development and preserving the environment of New Mexico.
Within the NMDOT, the Intelligent Transportation Systems Bureau is responsible for utilizing data, information and advanced communications in real time operations to improve roadway and transportation safety and efficiency.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
This position exists in support of the Department's Intelligent Transportation System operations which uses technology and advanced communications to make the roadways and traffic operations safer and more efficient.
TMC operators utilize and maintain Traffic Management Center Systems to monitor roadway networks and initiate responses to events which affect traffic and travel conditions.
How does it get done?
Monitoring the highways and roadways using and operating closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs)
Placing information on the various platforms of traveler information systems including dynamic message signs (DMSs)
NMRoads Web Application and the NM 511 phone system
Dispatch Highway Emergency Lending Patrol (HELP) Trucks to assist with stranded motorists and provide emergency traffic control for incident responses and clearances, coordinate with responding agencies for resource allocations at response scenes
Monitoring sensor feeds from roadside weather information systems (RWISs) in anticipation of initiating response plans
Maintain all radio communications during event management
Prepare daily, weekly, monthly and annual reports used for tracking activities as part of performance measures
Who are the customers?
This job is done for the Intelligent Transportation Systems Operations who in turn provide support services to both internal (District public information officers, Advanced Traveler Information System administrators) and external (other transportation agencies, incident responders and the motoring public) customers.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred experience/education in the following areas:
*Radio dispatch services
*Managing intelligent transportation systems equipment and operating applications
(dynamic message signs, closed circuit television systems, roadside weather information systems)
*Utilizing and operating advanced traveler information system applications and advanced
transportation management system applications,
*Managing multiple-tasks in high stress environments
*Providing traffic incident management support to incident responders
*Adept in the Microsoft suite of services
*Good communication skills
*Working in both a team environment and independently
Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or equivalent and six (6) months of experience in highway maintenance, construction, engineering, physical science, mathematics, surveying, drafting, highway design, traffic engineering, communications, dispatching, permits, and/or purchase orders. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) months may substitute for the required experience. Must possess or obtain and maintain a Driver's License, (or equivalent license from another state) within one (1) year of hire.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office and in the field, with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Work in varying weather conditions hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow; and exposure to sunlight. Climb, walk in rough and steep terrain for extended periods of time. Work also involves discussions with public and private individuals, driving and travel alone with some overnight stays; exposure to fumes and noise, snakes and insects. Must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Possibility of temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty, extended hours and travel is required.
