*1. About Aether Aerospace*
Aether Aerospace is a South Wales-based drone development and service delivery company operating primarily in the defence and security sectors. We design, build, test, and operate uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) for demanding customers who need reliable capability in the field — spanning threat simulation, pilot training, logistics delivery, and beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations.
Our in-house engineering team works at pace to close the gap between what users need and what they get, rapidly developing modular solutions under live MoD contracts. We're a small, growing team where people wear multiple hats and take genuine ownership of their work. If you're looking for a role where you can shape how things are done — not just follow a process someone else wrote — this could be a great fit.
*2. About the Role*
We're hiring software engineers with some professional experience who are looking for a change of pace and the chance to grow with the company.
You'll work across the full breadth of our technology stack: user-facing applications and ground control software, tooling, networking protocols, and the software that runs on the aircraft itself. You'll move between different projects and domains, building a wide set of tools and applications to support internal and external users.
The work involves solving practical problems that don't always have off-the-shelf answers and shipping those solutions into operational environments. Our roles span the whole software lifecycle — from prototype through to maintenance and feature enhancements. Priorities will shift as contracts and capabilities grow, so what matters most to us is pride in the quality of what you produce, a willingness to learn and grow, and an appetite to keep improving.
This is primarily a desk-based role with travel expected for customer demonstrations, field trials, and testing. Some work involves physical hardware that can only be done on-site. We encourage people to be in the office as much as possible, but there is flexibility to work remotely when the work allows.
*3. What You'll Be Doing*
* Designing, building, and shipping software across our stack — from operator-facing ground control applications, to onboard aircraft software and the tooling that supports both.
* Working towards owning features end-to-end — from initial design and prototyping through to release, deployment, and ongoing support in operational environments.
* Working closely with hardware, flight test, and operations colleagues to translate real-world needs into working software.
* Integrating with drone autopilots, sensors, and communication systems — including ArduPilot, MAVLink, and the radio links that tie everything together.
* Writing clean, maintainable code and contributing to code review, testing, and continuous improvement of our engineering practices.
* Investigating and resolving issues from the field, reproducing problems against simulators (SITL) and real aircraft.
* Building and maintaining internal tooling, simulation environments, and CI infrastructure.
* As you grow into the role, contributing to how we build software as the team grows — including technical decisions, tooling choices, and engineering standards.
*4. What We're Looking For*
* At least 2 years of professional experience writing software in C++, Python, Dart, or a similar language (our primary stack is Dart/Flutter, with regular use of C++ and Python)
* Clear communication — able to explain technical reasoning to both technical and non-technical colleagues
* Familiarity with Git
* Comfortable working in the UK defence sector
* Eligible for UK SC Clearance – depending on the nature of the work, we may require the successful candidate to apply for and obtain SC. Candidates must meet the baseline eligibility criteria, including a minimum of 5 years' UK residency
* Willing to learn and improve
*5. Nice to Have*
* Experience in aerospace, defence or similarly regulated environment
* Exposure to embedded systems or single-board computers
* Experience with IP and/or RF based communication
* Understanding of drone systems, flight controllers, or autopilot software (e.g. ArduPilot, MAVLink)
* Interest in working with physical hardware
*6. What We Offer*
* £40,000-£50,000
* Long-Term Incentive Plan (LTIP) — profit share allocation tied to company performance
* 26 days annual leave plus UK bank holidays
* Employer pension contribution (auto-enrollment and above)
* On-site fitness facilities (gym and climbing wall)
* Opportunity to gain drone pilot qualifications
