The Phlebotomist/Lab Tech retrieves blood from patients for laboratory testing by venipuncture and capillary collections. Serves patients by preparing specimens for laboratory testing and/or performing screening procedures (CLIA).

- Maintain strict adherence to privacy and confidentiality protocols, ensuring the protection of both patient and employee information in accordance with Spectra Health's policies.

- Strictly adhere to all Spectra Health policies and procedures, and act as a departmental advocate for Spectra Health's Compliance Program activities.
Essential Job Functions:
- Perform basic phlebotomy procedures
- Evaluate patients for ability to withstand venipuncture procedure
- Explain the venipuncture procedure and answer patient questions
- Perform basic point of care testing (CLIA), such as blood glucose levels on patients
- Prepare blood, urine, and other body fluid specimens for testing according to established standards
- Verify patient by reading patient identification
- Maintain an efficient flow of patients
- Maintain specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures
- Track collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed
- Perform ECG on patients/customers
- Maintain quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes
- Maintain safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations
- Resolve unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations
- Serve and protect Spectra Health by adhering to professional standards, clinic policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements
- Enhance phlebotomy department and Spectra Health's reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
- Maintain an environmentally clean laboratory
- Maintain and order supplies as needed
- Communicate supply needs or problems to IT Support Staff
- Assist reception with answering telephone, routes calls and takes accurate and complete phone messages for the provider or nurse and relays information in a prompt manner
Job Qualifications:
Required:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Six (6) months medical experience related to patient care.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
Preferred:
- Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT), but not required.
- Previous pediatric phlebotomy experience.
- Knowledge of the use, care and storage of lab equipment and instruments.
Physical Requirements:
The Phlebotomist/Lab Tech works in a clinical environment that requires the employee to be on the feet for long periods of time. This position requires the ability to communicate with patients and periodically might require the ability to lift and carry items (not more than 20lbs).
