Quality Engineer Reporting Line: QA Manager Position Summary:
This position is responsible for overseeing and improving quality assurance systems across manufacturing operations, with a strong focus on metrology and in-line vision systems. The role involves leading the resolution of external customer complaints by identifying issues, validating root causes, and driving corrective actions through structured methodologies such as 8D, while ensuring thorough documentation and timely closure. It also includes auditing and validating production processes to maintain high quality and efficiency standards, using data analysis to implement corrective and preventive actions. The QA Engineer collaborates closely with production and cross-functional teams to provide training, ensure compliance, and support continuous improvement initiatives. Additionally, the role requires monitoring key performance metrics, ensuring proper calibration of measuring equipment, and serving as a key point of contact for internal and external reporting on metrology and quality performance. Duties and Responsibilities: Manages external customer complaints from initial handling to closure. Leads resolution teams and champions the use of the 8D problem solving methodology in the effective resolution of issues and its documentation. Drives closure of actions to correct and prevent issues, assessing and validating their effectiveness. Monitors and analyzes data to implement actions that drive improvements in product quality, manufacturing processes, customer support systems, and key performance metrics. Work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, production, and sales, to understand customer requirements, measurement methods, align strategies, and address quality issues. Leads and ensures the effectiveness of the Customer Focus Team (CFT) by: Initiating and facilitating meetings with clear objectives. Leading discussions to understand and resolve issues using the 8D methodology. Documenting meeting minutes and following up on action items Develop, implement, and maintain metrology procedures, vision systems, and quality processes in alignment with quality standards. Act as a subject matter expert in metrology, vision system, quality inspection processes, and Quality Management System. Review, maintain, and ensure up-to-date documentation related to quality processes and calibration records. Ensure compliance with industry standards and internal quality management systems. Support quality-related projects by conducting data analysis, monitoring project performance, and ensuring the implementation of improvements in line with quality objectives. Proactively participates in new product and process development by focusing on validation of product quality characteristics during development and ensuring production readiness. Leads internal and external ISO audits. Skills and Knowledge: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience in a related technical field with a minimum of 5 years of experience. Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, communication and writing skills In-depth knowledge of 8D problem solving methodologies. In-depth knowledge of ISO9001, ISO 14001, ISO 13485 and IATF industry standards. ISO Lead Auditor experience desired; certified auditor is a plus. Expert knowledge of inspections equipment such as VCMM, CMMs, vision systems, and handheld measuring equipment. Hands on experience with IATF16949 core tools application (APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA, SPC,) compliance. Proficient in measurement systems analysis (MSA) tools such as Accuracy, Linearity and GR&R. Proficiency in operating, programming, and troubleshooting contact and non-contact CMMs (e.g., MicroVu, Mitutoyo, Keyence). Strong analytical, problem-solving, leadership, planning, and organizational skills Proficient in MS Excel, MS, Access, PowerPoint, and Word Knowledge in Statistical Process Control (SPC) Supervisory Responsibility None Has the authority to make decisions regarding metrology procedures, calibration processes, and quality disposition within designated scope. Recommend corrective and preventive actions based on quality data analysis and performance metrics. Identify areas for process improvement, propose solutions, and drive the execution of quality improvement initiatives. Have the authority to collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement changes that enhance product quality and operational efficiency. Train and guide team members on the proper use of metrology equipment, SPC systems, and calibration procedures. They may also take a leadership role in mentoring junior staff and ensuring that quality standards are consistently met. Act as a liaison between the company and external stakeholders, including customers and vendors, for matters related to Metrology, SPC reporting, and quality control processes. Escalate the matter to senior management or relevant department heads to ensure timely resolution. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time as required by the role. Manual dexterity required for operating calibration equipment, measuring instruments, and computers. Ability to lift or carry materials weighing up to 25-50 pounds (e.g., equipment, instruments, or documents). Ability to work in environments where precision and attention to detail are critical (e.g., QA dimlab, cleanrooms or production areas). Occasional need to climb stairs or access elevated work areas, as necessary, depending on the facility's layout. Primarily based in an office or laboratory environment but may also require time spent in production or manufacturing areas. Exposure to typical office and manufacturing floor conditions (e.g., computers, equipment) and industrial settings, which may include noise, heat, and varying lighting conditions. Work may involve exposure to potentially hazardous materials or substances (e.g., chemicals, electrical equipment), with appropriate safety precautions and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided. Occasional travel to customer sites, vendors, or different plant locations may be required. Flexibility in work hours may be necessary, especially during project deadlines or to accommodate different time zones if working with global teams.
